British English has been heavily influenced by French (admittedly, one of the most beautiful languages). American English hasn't had as much foreign influence (ironic because of the "nation of immigrants" meme, but true).
American English, especially in isolated regions like Appalachian mountain communities, is more similar to Elizabethan English. British linguists have discovered that when they read Shakespeare plays with an Appalachian accent, it creates better rhyme schemes and adds more meaning to the plays. Regardless, I prefer an accent like Sir Patrick Stewart's accent for Shakespeare plays. Even if it's more "historically accurate", I wouldn't want to watch Hamlet with a hillbilly accent.
