>read French lit
>90% is about revolution or revenge
Why is the French national spirit so focused on these topics? Is there, as the meme goes, some ancestral butthurt inflicted on the nation, or perhaps some greatness they were c︂ucked out of ages past?
I want to understand their culture, but so much of it falls back to this narrative that, from the beginning, assumes there is some wrong that must be righted.
In return, how do the French or other nations feel about American lit?
Bump for all heroes of the Vendée.

Because the revolution left a big scar to us, that still totally hasn't cicatrized completly.
I'd say look at litterature from before the revolution but it'd be written in ancient french and I highly doubt it would be understandable.

The annoying thing with French lit it's the obssesion with shitty romances... i don't fucking care of reading the story of some annoying woman searching love and comit suicide at the end written by some ancient basement dweller...

>it'd be written in ancient french
Wait, the French language changed that much for last 200 years? I can easily read all Polish books published in the early 19th century. Modern Russian is also very similar to Pushkin's Russian.

No no not much, 18th century is still fine, but before that it starts to get hardly understandable.

And you can still be tricked by some old-fashioned way of building the sentences, or even definitions of word changing completly.

It'd be understandable for a French, we can read stuff from up to about 500 years ago I'd say, but for a foreigner with it could be hard
That being said maybe OP is fluent

>but for a foreigner with it could be hard
for a foreigner it could be hard
I always fuck my sentences up past 23h
>>51856776
Oh, then OK, Polish older than 18th c. is hard too.

>Why is the French national spirit so focused on these topics?
Don't be surprised, it was/is important on a global scale.
