why don't japanese houses have proper heating like the civilized world?
>>
>>51839662
We think central heating is a waste of energy and the air conditioning or the electric heating is OK enough.
I live in Tokyo and don't know other area.
I use this.

We don't have heating either
Freezing to death here tbqh
>>
>>51839982
It's not very cold during the winter and you can always use the air-conditioning. I don't like it so I don't use it.
>>
heating via yuri love is literally the most pure and civilized form of heating ever to exist

Japs are fucking liers just found out that in summer their super hot temperature is only 32º

Because gay girls don't use eletricity.
>>
>>51840126
is it 22 celsius? because that's what our homes stay at all year. it's perfectly normal for people to wear boxers and t-shirt at home during winter. outside weather doesn't affect indoor temperatures
>>
>>51840156
I h-have air conditioning on and it's at 24°C

For future reference, those are called space heaters.

They're sorta popular in the US but if you live in the Midwest like me, our people are experienced when it comes to harsh winters. Every building in Chicago has centralized heating, it would truly be too cold if otherwise

It probably doesn't get cold enough in Japan to warrant anything beyond a simple heated table (I forgot what they're called) and a space heater
>>
>>51840338
For you it's hot but if it happens every year you get used to it
They treat it like it's the end of the world and they can't even move because it's too hot
>>51840311
We have the same shit every day, it's hot sure but if you are not in the sun you can deal with it.
>not playing football barefoot in the sun at 30º on concrete

Finn-chan~
>>
>>51840524
when I was an exchange student in the midwest my host "parents" would shut off the centralized heating (forced air ayyyyy lmao) at night and turn it on again in the morning to save electricity I assume.

is this normal behaviour or were they really cheap? they were rich as fuck and it was a huge house tBh

25c is the official "too hot to function" limit in finland. we even have a separate word for it used not just by people but meteorologists etc
>>

>it's perfectly normal for people to wear boxers and t-shirt at home during winter.
This is what people in Hokkaido (north part) say this. They must have different heating system.
Personally, I never had any problem at my home, when it's cold, it put the heater or the air-conditioning and when it's not cold I don't put it.
My apartment is always around 18-20 ℃ during the winter. I have never noticed anything uncomfortable about the temperature during the winter.
I prefer chilly temperature though.

Hell yeah that's a Midwest thing. U don't need the heat on at night it's just a waste, your natural body head under the covers will keep you warm.

Where in the Midwest did you stay? Did you like it? Did you live anywhere else in America?

On average, the people here are much more friendly
>>

anything higher than 18° is too hot t᠎bh

Yeah but you are not used to high temperatures
Japs should be since it happens every year and 32º it's top heat of the year(according to wikipedia) not regular heat

Finnbros, confirm or deny 10 degrees Celsius (50 Fahrenheit) is the optimal temperature

Just warm enough to get away with a light jacket at most, not cold enough to freeze. Right now Chicago is experiencing a warm ass winter, not even snow on the ground yet

Thank you very much for letting me know this.
I always appreciate the correction of the language from English native speakers.

northern michigan (lower peninsula). it was fun but going from a city to a town of 5k people can be a little rough. i never got used to strangers recognizing me on the streets and striking up conversations.

i have family on the east coast (maine, boston, new york) so after my year of studying I spent a month living/traveling with them and have visited them multiple times before and since then. i love big cities but eating lobster in maine as a staple of every dinner like it was potato or something never gets old.

>your natural body head under the covers will keep you warm.

yeah but getting out of a warm bed to a 10c house made waking up each morning absolutely horrible
>>
>>51839662
our houses have to be summer-based style.
this is one of the unbreakable rule for 700 years.

No problem buddy, when I was learning German I realized that native speakers would never correct me when I made mistakes, probably because they thought it would be rude/they didn't wanna seem like nazis

But being corrected is the best way to learn.

>>51840964
15c is the perfect temperature. warm enough to wear shorts and a t-shirt but not hot enough to be uncomfortable.

the air is fresher at 10c though and with a sweater or a hoodie it's perfect

>>51839662

Japan isn't civilized country nor first country, so it's not problem desu.

>waking up to a cold house sucks

Iktfb, but to counter it, you do the good old American tradition of showing in the morning.

It means our bed sheets are probably a bit dirtier than need be, but you can wake up/warm up with a nice hot shower in the mornings

My chinky parents said this was my biggest tell in "abounding traditions and fully becoming an American": showering in the mornings

Also, yeah despite the memes I understand that you'd be put off by some stranger coming up and talking to you and starting up some small talk. But he was probably just excited to see a new face and wanted to know your story. This is perceived as friendliness here stateside, but as nosiness other places.

Did u spend the winter in Michigan? How did you like that Lake front breeze? When you walk outside then feel that blast to your face; those are the worst days

>>

oh yeah a hot shower was a must but that also meant getting out of said long hot shower to a freezing house

yeah i spent the whole 12 months there and the town and our house were both on the waterfront so i definitely remember the winds. but the main thing that left an impression was how unpredictable the weather was. something to do with cold winds/weather systems coming all the way from canada over the lakes iirc. could be a sunny brisk beautiful day and 30 minutes later raining sideways and freezing. then an hour later sunny and pleasant again. i'm used to cold but that always caught me off guard.

Maybe newer ones are more efficient but my family never allowed space heaters because they're apparently really expensive to run. I've only heard of people using them in like sheds and shit where there's no heat.

I have meat-tech mainly around my belly and my whole body so it's always hot during the winter.

yeah almost i lived in harbor springs but petoskey was where we'd do our shopping etc.

the town had like 10x the people during summer compared to winter
>>
>>51842596
What were the public schools like there? I feel like there is a lot of money Harbor Springs (maybe that is just my bias) but no idea what the financial demographics are for the people who live there year-round... I know you said your host senpai was doing pretty well but no idea whether or not that is representative of the larger population.

pretty big income disparity. lots of gated communities but also trailer park tier neighbourhoods in such a small town. only one school though so on the parking lot you'd see convertible bmws next to pic related. one of my good friends actually drove a truck that had a wooden bed and only the passenger side door worked.

on average though i think people were well off and the school had plenty of funds and resources. for a small school of under 500 people we had a proper football stadium and a separate practice court and nice facilities for track & field, soccer, theatre, musics, multiple computer labs etc. when i spoke with some of my friends who were inland their counties sounded much poorer.

Traditionally, Japanese houses have focused on withstanding humid, hot summer.
The relative humidity in Tokyo during summer, for example, is over 90% while it's 60% or so in typical northern European cities like London or Paris.
The humidity combined with a temperature of 32-35 degree Celsius makes the environment reach the red zone, imminent heatstroke level, and thus houses had to be airy, which kills central heating.
Although the invention of air conditioner made it obsolete, a lot of people are still ingrained with the custom except in Hokkaido where central heating is essential to survive.

>>
>>51846106
Not immediately. I may be wrong but I think your body can't cool fast enough and your temperature slowly increase and your brain and some other organ just begin to boil or something.
>>
>>51839938
it's only a waste of energy if you have paper walls which let all the heat escape
