You have to put the continental border somewhere. The Turkish and Iranian borders are an easy option. Any other way looks weird.
For example, excluding Azerbaijan but not Armenia or Georgia - what happens with Nagorno-Karabakh? Or excluding everything south of Russia - so you'd exclude Georgia but include Chechnya, Dagestan, Ingushetia, etc.? And what about Abkhazia?
It gets a lot messier if you move beyond the Turk-Iran line.
