So the company I work for has decided(against their better judgement) to send me to Osaka for a week to attend a symposium.
I've already been assured that 90% of the people there will be speaking English but I have all but 0 knowledge of Japanese culture/customs. Any tips on not coming off as a western asshole and any insight on how to act professionally would be greatly appreciated. The """Japan Appreciation""" threads have offered no help.
Did you ask Japan general? They were pretty helpful to me when I needed help. Had a huge .zip with all sorts of useful info.

Nips will hate you for just being American, no point in trying to "act professionally".
1. Talk about anime as much as possible.
2. The word "kawaii" is the most polite thing you can say to them.
3. To fit in better, pronounce all "l"s as "r"s.
4. Bow as low as possible whenever somebody enters the room.
5. Buy a couple of kimonos and wear one everywhere you go.
if you make a friend give them a gift your last day there

also discuss their war crimes
The Japanese word for "to be honest" is "desu".
Never be late. Being late is one of the rudest thing you can do, they absolutely hate this (even if they'll never show it). Also, being 5 minutes early = being on time, and being on time = being late.
If you have to it with chopsticks, don't fool around with it. Especially, don't try to pass food chopsticks-to-chopsticks with your neighbour (it's somethng they do during death/burrial ceremonies, so it's a taboo).

Never seen a Japan general thread in /int/, if you could point me in the direction of one it would be much appreciated.
