>Brazil is experiencing the country's worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
>The Wall Street Journal reports Brazil’s gross domestic product shrank 4.5 percent in the third quarter. According to Brazil’s statistics agency, the new figures reveal the largest contraction since >Brazil started measuring GDP by the current system in 1996.

>André Perfeito, the chief economist at Gradual Investimentos in São Paulo, likened the report to an obituary.
>“There were no positive signals in this for the Brazilian economy in the next few quarters, and we still can’t say we’ve hit bottom,” Perfeito said.

>Inflation in Brazil is at 14.25 percent and unemployment is at 7.9 percent.
>Luciano Rostagno, an economist at Votorantim Brokerage in São Paulo, said that Brazil’s current economic contraction could be the longest and deepest one since the 1930s.

>As Bloomberg reports, the nation’s financial struggles will be felt by the athletes and audiences alike.
>Participating athletes will be asked to pay for their own air conditioning in their dorm rooms, and stadium backdrops will be stripped to just the bare essentials.
>Mario Andrada, a spokesman for the organizers in Rio de Janeiro, addressed the reasoning behind the austere Olympic conditions.
>"The goal here is to organize games without public funding and to organize games that make sense from an economic point of view," he said.

Why were they chosen to host it if they can't even afford it?
>>

Olympics is con on par of global warming. It's pure money laundering. If you look deeper - it's part of CIA program "bread and circuses".
>>
>>51788877
It looked different to the outside world when we were chosen
>>
Will this be the end of roastbeef?
>>
Brazil's economic rise was purely the result of its natural resources (mostly from China) and nothing else. Now that the world is contracting and falling commodity prices, it has nothing to fall back on.

Also it elected a communist.

>Why were they chosen to host it if they can't even afford it?
if they started choosing the locations based on how much of a non-shithole it is, then only western countries would get chosen every time
>>

>Also it elected a communist.
Lula was a gommie too technically, it has been the same party in power for 14 years
>>
>>51789225
Doesn't seem like a bad thing Tbh. They could look at it as an incentive to improve.
>>
>>51789522
So now they need to spend hundreds of millions on both improvements and international showboating. Sounds like a great plan.
>>
>>51789225
>non-shithole

hilarious you forget about East Asia. the next Winter Olympics is going to be held in South Korea and Japan is going to have the next Summer Olympics.

Things seemed pretty okay in Brazil during the world cup (economically I mean, not athletically; 7-1 Germany, never forget the Great Unhue-ing) a few years ago. Has Brazil's economy really been impacted that much in mere months?

What caused this? Socialist policies? Crashing commodity prices?
Any Brazilians on /int/ care to explain the scope of this economic recession to an ignorant gringo? How are it's effects being felt in the different regions of the country? In cities? In small communities?

Athletes from cold countries are literally fucked.

Rio is extremely hot, foreign athletes will all be tired and perform like shit. A great opportunity for Brazilian athletes to get many gold medals and make Brazil proud.
>>
>>51790310
Why are brazilians so extreme shit at every sport except football?
>>
>>51790310
How much do you want to bet that Germany will get more gold medals than you, just to rub in their victory over you in the world cup? Lol
>>
>>51790092
This text is really overblown, but the recession is real. This has even generated the beginning of an impeachment process. Brazil's economy was stabilized because FHC (1995-2002) and Lula (2003-2010) followed the same economic principles, but then Dilma and her retarded Finance Minister shat on that beginning 2011, now the wave is crashing. During the World Cup it was already an issue, if it seemed okay then you have a different idea of okay or you expect riots and the such, just remember Brazil isn't really third world anymore, we are reasonably stable (I'm just saying this because I have no idea if you know something about Brazil or not). We're seeing the effects mostly on commerce/retail which is weak right now, and rising bills.

This isn't by far the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Whoever wrote this is 18 years old or has a bone to pick, the 80's and early 90's were much, much worse like you cannot believe. Brazil will have rough maybe two years ahead but it'll be okay. There's still the matter of impeachment, I don't know if this will gain that much of a leverage though, however the opposition is dominating Congress right now so it throws a wrench in the machine, think of it as when a government shutdown happens in the US, or filibustering.

Truth is that Brazil has always been dependent on China buying our commodities, but Brazilians were too prideful to see that. Now China has derailed the Brazilian economy by simply reducing iron ore imports.

Chicago lost the Olympic bid to Rio

Great choice Olympic committee
>>
Literally everyone knows this.
Brazil just didn't have the guts to say they can't handle it, now it's 4 years too late and the deficit they will take from this and the world cup will chase them for 10 years.
>>
>>51791788
I don't know how to feel about it Tbh. Would have been cool to have it here but traffic would be even worse and mayor Rahm would have found some way to fuck it up or manipulate it for his friends' gain.
