Hard to say, Danmark already invested in F-35 so going back would be a waste of money. But the Eurofighter is cheaper, and more "domestic" product, so they just might afterall. I don't believe Danish would chose Super Hornet over Eurofighter, but if US gov will attempt to strike an attractive deal it's a possibility too.

It's not nearly as powerful (at it's peak, the Dutch Republic had 2000 ships), but it's hard to compare them. Back then, basically all our trade ships were armed and the VOC could even wage it's own war. There wasn't any central command either, but 5 admiralties that formed their own fleet.
When we lost Indonesia right after WW2 there was the realization that our role has changed and our navy was not able to do it's overseas duties. The navy built a new and smaller fleet around the aircraft carrier Hr.Ms. Karel Doorman, also with the help of the MDAP program. During the Cold War we got a bigger fleet again, which then gradually got smaller again due to budget cuts.
In the last few years our navy has been under a transformation with a big focus on amphibious operations. The core of our navy currently consists of a new Joint Support Ship (command ship, LPD and replenishment ship at same time), 2 LPDs, 4 Destroyers (being upgraded for Ballistic Missile Defence capabilities), 2 multipurpose frigates (soon to be replaced), 4 OPVs and 4 diesel-electric subs (soon to be replaced). Apart from the subs and the 2 multipurpose frigates, all of it is brand spanking new with top tier sensor suites and armament.
