The Finns proper (the southwestern area) was all ready Christianized by the time they swore fealty to the Swedish king. The Swedish crusade was just basically an excuse to secure the border to Novgorod. I don't know about the societal structure, but the oldest Finnish nobility is supposedly the chieftains who got noble titles for swearing fealty to Sweden.

To be fair the Russians didn't really do much fucking up the place in 1808-09. It was a fairly peaceful occupation, especially compared to the previous Russian occupations of Finland. There was the occasional raping and looting, but for the most part the officers kept their men in check because Alexander I intended to conquer Finland from the Swedes right from the start, and didn't want to treat his soon-to-be sujects too badly. The harshest things done by the Russians tended to be ordering local farms to give up horses, carts and men to drive them to help with their logistics, and the Swedish army did that too.

The fact is, however, that Hitler was going to attack Soviet Union with or without Finns on his side and because Leningrad was so close to Finland, it was inevitable that Finnish soil was to be used in the offense. And if you remember why Winter War started, Stalin was already preparing for a war with Germany. It was only a matter of time before one of them attacked, so it was better to fight against Soviet Union than be occupied by them.

I agree that the proximity to Leningrad was an issue, but an issue that Stalin considered done and dusted by taking Karelia in the Winter War. And yes the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was about to break, but I do not think that it was inevitable that Finland would have been a part of Operation Barbarossa - since the Germans would've reached Leningrad in 1941 anyway.
