is this common in other eastern block countries or its just a polish thing?

In every ex-commie country. This is somehow connected to the fact that there were plenty of them in shops before the new year.

I don't know why, but (good quality) Mandarins are usually only available cheaply and in bulk during winter. This leads to some people (me included) eating copious amounts of them during Christmas. Some people even make Christmas decorations with the skin.

My family is Polish and we eat it on Christmas, New Year and Easter.

They're available year round but prices are lowest and quality is heighest around Christmas, when they're in season.. We don't traditionally eat them with Christmas, but there are plenty around in that period.

In some regions of the country kids go around with lanterns and sing songs door to door, on St. Martin's Day (November 11th), and then they get treats (a bit like on Halloween).. These days it's 99% candy, but back in the day you'd often get mandarins.. (I preferred Mars bars tbqh..)

Slav bros question to you. Do you have in your country during communism time and early 90s candys gifts in national factories? Jesus I remember how happy I was when few days before christmas my mom and dad every yar bring to home two full fucking bags of sweets most of them I never saw in normal shop. There was so many of them that we gave 1/3 to orphanage and still I had problem to eat this all in next 2 weeks.

mandarin oranges , satsumas, whatever you want to call them are pretty big everywhere at the end of the year, my plumbing friend. Most likely because you usually pick them during late October.
In belgium, Holland and northern France they're connected with st nicolas (which is today), along with marsipan and chocolate figurines of niggers.
In China and Japan they eat them at new year's because it's a sign of abundance (and they're fucking tasty).
I suspect all the scandi countries do the same

We have this in Ireland. I never see them any other time of year.

It's weird because nobody considers it a tradition, it just sort of happens every year. I noticed it a few years ago and everyone just went "oh yeah, wonder why". I always looked forward to the mandarins in my stocking and used to get so butthurt if it burst.
>>
>>51736270

Love it.
Does Romania have good skiing locations?
Most of the German ones get very little snow because of climate change nowadays so you either have to go to France/Switzerland/Austria or ski on a glacier. Not a fan of artificial snow at all.

>>
>>51738244
What surprises me is that barszcz has kind of become the Christmas soup across the entire country. As far as I can gather it used to be more of a Kresy thing before the war.

Send me some gift on new year, guys.
