I've never met anyone from there or even remember anything in the news about it. But it's exactly in the middle of our two blackest states (rio and bahia) so I guess there is a sizable black population.
Saying a person is of Italian heritage is nearly a given in southeast brazil, it's harder to find someone without some italian blood. I think it's the only heritage more common than portuguese.
