Britain is the kid that never really belong anywhere. They sort of want to be with the EU, but they resent the idea of calling themselves European. They like freedom, but you know keeping track of people and not encrypting stuff is sorta neat, too. They want to be an empire, but human rights and kind of good, too.

This post is right.
Britain has a complex where they feel they are special snowflakes and want to be recognised independently and not be tied down to the EU.
But they also want to be part of the EU for the political and economic advantages, though Britain always has one foot out the door.
If Britain committed to the EU they would be alot more influential inside the EU. Though Britain also wants influence across the globe, for example the economic deals Osbourne made with China this year over nuclear power. And as churchill called it the special relationship it has with America. Though after the suez canal crisis Britain is a chained bulldog for America, not quite as much as a bitch as then though.
So to conclude Britains afraid of commitment and only wants the best deal possible for its own self-interests. Still a key world power, but not as influential as it thinks it is.
