Why do Americans separate Catholicism from Christianity?
Catholicism mixed with native religions in a lot of places in the Americas. Leading to some really weird shit.

Because they're different things based on the same source material. Catholicism places more emphasis on the Virgin Mary and has the Pope as a spiritual leader, whereas Christianity places more emphasis on Jesus and disregards many parts of the bible that aren't about him. There's less leadership, moreso a number of individual preachers and their congregation.
