Despite the Middle East outside of Saudi Arabia only making up 4% of our oil supply. How deluded can Europoors and Ausfailians be?
>>
then why did you invade Iraq and Afghanistan?

Afghanistan: removing a clear enemy threat in the Taliban, who were harboring al-Qaeda

Iraq: long-standing bad blood between Hussein and the USA dating back to his invasion of our ally in Kuwait and continued defiance against us, so basically oil

No, iraq was invaded because it was getting too strong and that's something the US would never forgive an arab country to do
>>
>>51700923
>>51700926

Both.
>>
In retrospect, Bush handled the Iraq situation well. An example of what happens when you hesitate taking out the insane dictator is current Syria.
>>
>>51700955
The fuck happened in 1990?
>>
>>51704823
Most likely denbts.
>>
>>51704572
Current situation in Syria is actually result of Iraq invasion. There at least would be no ISIS.
>>

it's called the gulf war, followed by severe sanctions
>>
>>51704572
>In retrospect, Bush handled the Iraq situation well. An example of what happens when you hesitate taking out the insane dictator is current Syria.

BUT HE WASN'T AN INSANE FUCKING DICTATOR.
>>
The oil itself isn't important, not selling oil on the dollar is what pissed off America. Whether that is the full reason we invaded is up for debate though.
>>
>>51700869
>Europeans and Australians unironically believe we invaded Iraq and Afghanistan for oil.
But you did.
>>
>>51700869

You fucking retard. Google 'PNAC Rebuilding Americas Defenses'.
>>
>>51700869
They don't care about facts, they care about reinforcing an anti-American narrative.
>>
>>51704879
actually the current situation in Syria is a result of the Arab Spring. You are correct in saying that ISIS would probably not exist if Iraq hadn't been invaded though
>>
Also the people that claim we invaded for oil (the semi intelligent ones at least) know about America's oil supply. The claim is that we invaded to control the oil supply so that the middle east wouldn't horde their oil or anything so that when oil becomes more scarce, the US has more oil, potentially to export at an enormous profit. But the issue us more nuanced and there is not one single reason for the Iraq war, the oil thing is probably just one reason among many.
>>
>>51705506
>>51705506
They'd exist but it would still be Al Qaeda and they would lack the ex-Baathist military leaders who are kind of their strength.

Hussein attacked 2 countries including a US ally (Kuwait). He also supposedly massacred his own people.
>>
>>51705344
Not him but,
Afghanistan..oil...
Afghanistan is a worthless hellhole.
>>
>>51705660
He definately gassed the Kurds that isn't even ambiguous and his war with Iran was fucked.
>>
No one genuinely thought you were doing it to take the oil itself, its the subsequent control of the market.

The British did the same in the 1950s with Iran, and kept doing it with mining and rubber to this day. You simply did the same thing, but because you''re stupider than they are you fixed some massive bullshit about protecting muh freedoms and ruined the entire continent.
>>
>>51705779
Yes, he gassed them with weapons you sold him. Same with his war against Iran, you kept that one going for nine years.

You forget that Saddam was a friend of the USA far longer than he was a foe.
>>
>>51705213
Yeah, he was. Still should have left him alone though.
>>
>>51705660
>Hussein attacked 2 countries including a US ally (Kuwait). He also supposedly massacred his own people.

kuwait is a city state that has as much oil as Iraq, and it was historically a part of Iraq. THe US had no right to interfere. How do you think germany was born?

>He also supposedly massacred his own people.

Fun fact, Iraq had sanctions imposed on it prior to 9/11, claiming they had WMDs. Those sanctions included vaccines, medical equipment, basic human necessities.
As a result, an estimated over 500,000 Iraq Children died. In response to this atrocity, Madeleine Albright (Secretary of State) was asked to comment on the matter. She said "it was worth it"

The US has killed more than 2 million people since 2001 [X],

Yes. Your country is evil. Either own up to it or don't look like a lying ill informed idiot.
>>
>>51706193
No, but it was relatively stable. Only the most hard core Islamists/Communists went there for a fight and most of them ended up dead. Europe and Africa had far more brutal wars than the ME in the 1990s. Prior to the Berlin Wall coming down, Islamic terrorism was about as relevant as ETA.

Was it a good place? No. Never has been. But it was relatively stable and was not a magnet for every lunatic in the world to go there and fight holy war. The US is solely to blame for the current problems in Iraq and Syria.

Actually the Kurdish part of Iraq was under the same sanctions, and got the same per capita rations, as the rest of Iraq, but they did not have the same problems with hunger/vaccines/etc because their government effectively distributed it. The part of Iraq under Saddam's control had hunger and shit because Saddam and his cronies kept it for themselves. They probably knew starving children was good anti american propaganda.

It's not that hard to believe. The sanctions were not absolute, there was an allowance so that the population didn't starve to death. Why would the US give them that allowance in the first place, then make it so small that so many people die?
>>
>>51705914
>gassed them with weapons you sold him.
And other shit that never happened. Iraq had its on program they didn't need to buy them from anyone genius. We wouldn't violate the chemical weapons convention anyways and for some shitty country like Iraq. We only supported him at first because he was opposed to Iran.
>>
>>51708479
iirc the allowance was in the form of oil they were allowed to sell under a set amount so that they could buy these things.

IIRC the mineral wealth was only found out after the war started and its like a mile or two underground in the middle of nowhere. Also, there'd be better countries to exploit for that. As far as opium, Taliban is making money on that. Our big Pharm needs opium but due to laws can't buy it from Afghanistan.
>>
>>51708716
The sanctions were because Iraq wouldn't comply with inspections of their nuclear facilities and the other shady stuff. Doesn't mean they had WMDs, but not complying should still be punishable. There were provisions in the sanctions to allow people to have enough food and vaccines to survive, but Saddam fucked that up while the part of Iraq administered by the Kurds didn't.

Denis Halliday was appointed United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Baghdad, Iraq as of 1 September 1997, at the Assistant Secretary-General level. In October 1998 he resigned after a 34-year career with the UN in order to have the freedom to criticise the sanctions regime, saying "I don't want to administer a programme that satisfies the definition of genocide"
