Winter war and the continuation war were when finns had to fight to keep their independence. It's just as relevant when celebrating independence as receiving it. Also it was hell of a lot cooler and more memorable than sending a telegram to moscow informing that "since you're fucked funland is independent now bye" and slaughtering a bunch of communist fuckwits who wanted to give finnish independence away right away when the country got it.
