For me it is very hard to understand spoken icelandic, but if they speak slowly, I can start to understand what they're saying.
To the faroese, written icelandic basically looks like faroese with bad grammar, and vice versa for the Icelandics.

Studies have also shown that the people of the Faroe Islands are the best at understanding all the nordic/scandic languages, as our first language is related to icelandic and old norse, and that we have the danish school system, which teaches us Danish as well as a bit of Norwegian and Swedish.

Faroese
Tons of inconsistencies, the ð sound disappeared in the 16th century although it's still kept for etymological and grammatical reasons (even though most people don't even know when to use it), limited vocabulary, genitive case almost fallen out of use entirely and replaced by just one (ugly) preposition + dative case.

The Faroese language is a useless peasant language that should have died out in the 18th century.

The average employee pays approx 40-50% of his wages in taxes (including tax on all purchased consumer goods). The "allowance" is only for Sweidsh citizens, and Scandinavians can get a citizenship after living there for only one year.

The allowance is ~$400/mo so it's not sufficient to live off of.

It might be shocking to an American like you, but in the EU tax rates are much higher than in the US.

I don't know the specific tax rates for the Scandi's, but here in NL we have a tiered income tax system with an average of like 39% tax on income. This pays for our social security and education, as well as all the other stuff govt's spend money on.

That's interesting. So it's kind of like a very weak version of communism. Slightly higher taxes, but there's a bigger safety net and more public resources.
How do people feel about that? In America we would rather have lower taxes and less of a safety. People at the bottom are not as comfortable, but if they succeed they'll keep most of their wealth.

My neighbor never went to college, started his own construction company and he's a millionaire. I think his tax rate is around 45%. I think that's too high.

Yeeeaaaahh.. no. Georgia first got their name from the "Kingdom of Georgia" in the year 1008 AD. Then they got conquered a bit, USSR took a bite of their land, and finally they became free again in 1991.

If anything, Georgia(US State) takes its name from Georgia(Country), not the other way round.

no absolutely not

it's super awkward to express any serious intimacy. In Dutch you can say "ik vind jou leuk" (I like you) of "jij bent mooi" (you're beautiful) but in Flemish this sounds extremely weird since our dialect never really uses "jou" or "jij", we say "u" and "gij/ge". The correct Dutch forms are only used in a professional setting (it's how the news anchors speak on tv). But if you use the Flemish forms like we do in daily life it sounds very... boerish? which kind of defeats the purpose of the phrases in question.

>>
>>51707998
Bokmål isn't a dialect technically, it's a written language. Standard Eastern Norwegian is the general spoken version of Bokmål in eastern Norway.
>>
>>51707998
It can barely be considered Norwegian at all. Like 70% of the vocabulary is from Danish, and it lacks many of the nice things about Norwegian too. It was based on how rich Norwegians spoke Danish, with some Norwegian added after that.
>>
>>51707998
Bokmål is just the written standard, but it resembles the eastern norwegian dialect the most. It is not better or worse, it's just banter.
>>
>>51708147

It resembles what is spoken in most of Eastern Norway currently, traditionally Eastern Norway had many different dialects that usually resembled Nynorsk more than they resemble Bokmål, but most of these dialects are extremely close to extinct today, replaced by spoken bokmål among most speakers.

Standard Eastern Norwegian is the dominant dialect in Oslo, Akershus, Vestfold, Southern Oppland, most of Telemark, Buskerud, probably Östfold, Hedmark, and if I am to guess, probably the northern parts of the Austagder coast.

Its grammar and vocabulary is also influential on the language spoken in most of Tröndelag, Nordland, Troms, Finnmark, and probably Western Norway too, but here they still have a non-Eastern accent that sounds different from "Standard Östnorsk", and they also tend to have different endings in conjugation, and a few unique words they pride themselves in. And they have different grammar to a greater degree. If you leave Eastern Norway, you'll find clearly different dialects, but if you look closer, you'll see that they use the words of Eastern Norwegian rather than the original words from their own dialects.

Bokmål will be more useful. But for high level Norwegian, learning Nynorsk could be useful too so you can see the patterns in the language more clearly.
>>
>>51708798
omg. I wish people would stop telling learners about nynorsk. literally no one uses it (actually 5-10% of the population). you could live a lifetime in norway without needing nynorsk. if you understand bokmål, you'll understand nynorsk as well.
>>
>>51708884
Unique words are also used in eastern norway. The same holds true for different endings. I'm from Ostfold and speak different when I'm home compared to when I'm at uni for example.
>>
>>51708884

The other countries put a bigger effort into exterminating their dialects. In Norway government has tried to encourage dialect use, so the death of the dialects has happened at a more natural rate than if they were outlawed.

Present tense we often use -ær endings
Jeg sparker en ball(Jei sparker en ball) => Jæ sparkær en ball.

I could add to this that our double L sound also differ, but I don't know phonemic orthography so it's hard to explain the difference.

This video is pretty good.

>Do I like it?
I'm grateful to be a native English speaker, and that I don't need to learn another language to be successful. However, I think English speakers should learn another language since so much of the world is learning English. It's not even people coming to English-speaking countries who are required to learn English. I find that a little unfair.
>>
>>51720093
not even close
its just Hindi with a persianized script

It's literally the most useless language in that area. If you want to learn the history of great cultures and civilizations, learn Hindi, Tamil, or Farsi. The only reason anyone would ever learn Urdu is if they're working for an intelligence agency in the terrorism department, even then, most terrorists are Pashtun or Afghani, and they have their own language.

Any politician who proposes such an idea will be called a communist. Taking peoples earnings and giving it to the community sounds a lot like communism to most people.

Don't native english speakers usually have to learn a second language like spanish?

Or is that shit voluntarily?
>>
>>51720513
We dont have to learn it. We take classes, but only like 5% of students can actually speak spanish after taking classes in school.
>>
>>51720513
Yeah I have to take French but maybe I'll learn 500 words and a few verb tenses if I'm an A student. No way can you consider a high school graduate bilingual if they took a French class in school. Some people put in the extra effort to actually learn the language, but most people don't.
>>
>>51720558

Makes sense, most people here learn english to a reasonable degree because it's the most usefull. But it's the same for german and french, most people pass the classes but wouldn't be able to hold a decent conversation with it.

It's actually quite common even though most of us are mixed.
There's a huge french community here, we have french schools, libraries etc... Also french language has a huge place here

Tunisians treat us like ones of them, since after all we're born and live here.

My arabic is good, i can speak without any problems but I never bothered to learn how to read (everything is written in french in cafes, cinemas, packages)

Mongolian.
Eh, dunno. I don't speak it much except when I'm outside. Verb grammar is super convoluted and super archaic--it's amusing from a linguistic standpoint. Noun grammar is moderately complex, a bit more than that of Japanese or Korean.
Mongolian is in the middle of the pack when it comes to the 'grammar-centric' vs. 'word usage-centric' scale. It's not one-dimensional, though. Latin was complex as fuck in both regards, for instance.

Now, the language I use most is Russian, and I like it.
>>
Spanish

Yes. Spanish is beautiful as fuck, alas, most spanish speakers and the ideas they communicate are not.
>>
>>51693696
Basque has to be related to japanese in some way. I used to watch anime in basque because I live near Euskadi and it sounds japanese as fuck. I've also heard that the structure is similar and some words are similar. But I don't know how the hell can these 2 languages be related, maybe a really really old siberian root
>>
>>51722743
This. It's one of the easiest languages to learn as second language.

Because of how much culture there is in English, if it were my second language, I could easily become more proficient in it than my native language.
>>
>>51722835
See the Dene-Caucasian language family hypothesis. So it's more related to Old Chinese than to Japanese, at least theoretically.
>>
>>51722325
Anon, I...

English is good as the current lingua franca as its grammar is nowhere near difficult. Yes, pronunciations are a shitfest of randomness, but I find it easier to learn how to pronounce a word once, than choosing between der, den, dem, das or die.
>>
I didn't realize how great English was until I started learning Spanish.
I love the way Spanish sounds, and you'll probably never have trouble with spelling, but as much as people like to bitch about English spelling (which actually does have something resembling a set of rules), there's quite a bit of arbitrary bullshit that I see across several languages, including Spanish.
An object does not have a gender, but on Spanish or French, it sure as fuck does, and the fact that an adjective has to agree with that gender is just fucking silly (is it blue in different ways, depending on if it's male or female?)
