You need to learn more unique shapes with simplified.
When you go beyond the first 2-3 thousand characters you will also run into a lot of characters that will be much harder to remember and to read correctly because you can not connect them to earlier ones. Stroke heavier phonetic components were replaced or removed in many common characters but left untouched in less common ones.
