I decided to learn Russian through Duolingo today, was doing decently well until I came across this lesson.
Why is it 'мoй' and not 'мнe'? Is 'бopщь' a masculine or a neuter noun? When should I use these two possessive pronouns?

I started learning when I was 19. Took an intro course in the spring and went to Russia for a summer, came back having a good grasp of the grammar and being able to have simple conversations but lacking the vocabulary and fluent-like grasp of the language to really express myself. Took two more courses and then returned to Russia for a bit more than a year, sometime during that year I got damn close to fluent. Now I can understand everything I read, about 98% of what I hear depending on the topic, and I can generally have conversations on most topics. Better at writing than speaking now as I've already gone more than a year without really practicing, but I can still converse pretty well, just not as comfortably/fluidly.
So in conclusion: with immersion? 2-3 years. Without? Never.

oops, my conclusion is about reaching near fluency. You can have basic conversations pretty quickly, but to really express yourself you'll need to learn a good bit. So depending on your standards for a conversation I'd say a few months to a year and a half or so to be able to "converse"

What do you mean by "Cyrillic languages"? Because there are languages that use Latin that are really similar to Russian, and languages that use Cyrillic that have nothing to do with Russian.
Did you mean Slavic?
If you are asking because you wanted to know the impact of Cyrillic itself on the difficulty to learn the language, Cyrillic should be a complete non-issue in terms of the difficulty of the language. It just takes a few days to get comfortable with the different letters. That's all it is. Just different shapes and a few extra letters. It's a normal alphabetical system, not some weird Chink stuff.

Yeah, slavic, rather... I meant the sort of Eastern yuropean languages that we're all so familiar with. To me as an uncultured brit, I might say they look the same, come from the same natives just about, and so they must be similar in structure... but who knows, I could be entirely wrong.

It's hard for me to say, since I already knew a Slavic language before starting to learn Russian. I hear that it's really hard though. Also, American accents can sound unbearable in Slavic languages, I'm not sure about British once though. I'm not trying to discourage you, just telling you what to expect. It is definitely possible for an English speaker to learn to speak Russian well without too bad of an accent. I wish I could tell you how long it could take, but it's hard to say. I was able to have really basic conversations after a few months, but that's a different situation.
