I lived there for 3 years, beijing/xian are much better.
They don't speak much english, but I speak mandarin natively so I didn't have a problem.
Hk food is disgusting compared to northern chinese dishes.

Lived in both Beijing and Hong Kong (and I've visited Xian). Hong Kong isn't remarkably different than any other developed country in east Asia. Beijing on the other hand feels very much like the largest city in a developing country, its also the most polluted place I've ever seen some days you can't see more than two meters in front of you because of the smog.

Xi'an (food and culture/atmosphere) > chengdu (pretty ass girls, my gf is from there) > guilin (too pretty) > beijing (you earn the most there now, moreso than shanghai or hk)
