This.
Fuckin duolinguo trying to make me believe that a "bocadillo" is a "emparedado" and a "coche" a "carro".
>>51641988
You bitched long enough that people actually care about telling PTBR from PTEU.
In my lifetime there has been a while when everything PT was exclusively European PT, except when it was manufactured in South America. I guess we've actually come a long way.

"Carro" is common in some place of south america but it's an old word for others.

Poor guys.
Question. I heard the order of malta still exists as a state.
How do you guys feel about that one?
>>51651316
It does not, but the Knights are still order as the modern order and they still have ownership/staff of some fortresses and stunningly old buildings from those times.
It's really cool from a historical perspective, but I have no national pride or identity in such matters.
>>51651527
Well, I meant this one.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovereign_Military_Order_of_Malta
I can understand you on that matter, but Malta is really a blank spot on my history map.
Personally it is pretty cool that it is the last surviving crusader state if you want to look at it that way.
>>51651732
Ah yes, that one. Yeah that exists but I wouldn't say it's really a crusader state. The Order doesn't rule the country anymore is what I mean (which was the case back then). They just have ownership of and still man a few historical fortifications and run some offices here in-house.
Hope this doesn't kill your buzz, bro.
>>51651951
>>51651732
>>51651527
I know, but Malta still was shaped by that time.
Pretty unique, the mix of people , cultures and traditions.
>>51651951
Do you look like an Arab?
>>51652067
This is true yes. We even have some towns that are completely surrounded by fortifications. I think it's the only language that borrows so much from several different languages, loanwords and syntax to form a super-strange dialect of Arabic that uses Latin script. It's quite strange, especially when I can speak clear Maltese to people from Tunis and they'll understand me perfectly but I can't understand shite from them.
>>51652187
Kindasorta? I grow a huge lumberjack beard as black as night with dark features and have slightly tanned skin, but the way I dress, talk, behave and everything is very un-arabic. And my skin isn't the particular shade of arab-ness.
>>51652194
>>51652276
Wait, isn't Malta one of those countries where you can buy citizenship?
>>51652276
Wait, isn't they you talk is very Arabic tho? Maltese sounds like Arabic and Italian to me
>>51652308
Yeah but for 800 thousand eurobux (about 870k in burgerbucks) but you also have to pass through a very strict process too.

It's a big mix, really. It's essentially a very heavy north african dialect but it's in latin script and have tons of loanwords and other little intricacies from other languages (usually from places that ruled us). Also lots of context-heavy words.
For example our traditional "Good Morning" is Bonju, a phonetic bastardization of the french Bonjour. Same with Bonswa for Good Evening (bon Soir) BUT we use that one as more of a "goodbye".
>>51652537
From what I understand It's essentially a way to get more money for the country's coffers and to stimulate more big businesspeople to come here to invest. We're very tourism-based (which is why we got many movies from big names coming along lately due to the handsome tax rebate)
>>51652604
Holy hell, I just read that muslims basically depopulated the island through raids and then resettled it around 1000.
Well, shit.
if that doesn't call for an identity crisis.
Do you feel arabic in any way?
Like Copts?
>>51652763
They actually did it multiple times. Before the Great Siege, Ottoman raiders took every single person on Gozo as a slave after the Citadel capitulated, if I remember correctly.
As a people and speaking for myself, no we really don't. We identify a lot more with southern Italians as a culture, traditions, religion and all that. Lazy sundays, siestas, olives, grapes and wine, very big focus on family and their values, farming-based for a longass time, very simple lives (at least back then).
>>51652893
Interesting.
Man i never realised how much shit Malta had to survive in those times.

Pretty much everyone gave us shit. Here's an article copied from somewhere else. The original seems to have been taken down and this new one has a bit of extra personal opinion near the end, but the large chunk of it is the same as I remember: http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20130623/life-features/Appalling-poverty-in-Malta-in-the-early-19th-century.475512
