Military service is mandatory. If you're unfit for service you get a 3% tax increase.

You can give up your gun after service, in fact I think you have to unless you get a permit.

Soldiers are not routinely issued handguns. There aren't enough Sig P229s in the world for everyone in Switzerland to own one. They can buy the rifle at the end of their conscription, but it has its select fire capability removed. It's also a battered service rifle, so most don't bother.
