You're right, those consonants in the middle of the word duplicate because there used to be more stuff at the and of those words in the past. The phenomenon is called "loppukahdennus" in Finnish, like "end-duplification" and it also occurs between separate words like "anna minulle" (give (something) to me) is pronounced like "annamminulle".

I don't think so. It's still /n/, even if pronounced as [ŋ]; /ŋ/ proper (written as "ng") wouldn't appear in that position.
This is one of those circumstances where it's good to remember that alphabets shouldn't bother with the sounds themselves, but the phonemes.

Italian has the same... beginning consonants getting "stronger", this makes word boundaries clearer.
Ironically, this might hint another "break" against the alphabetic principle - maybe there's probably an actual word boundary between "heme" and "keitto", but the orthography doesn't hint it by a space.
