Nothing,

I read something called Why We Lost by Daniel P. Bolger, it's "a general's inside account of the iraq and afghanistan wars" 430 pages

Then I read Isis: Inside the Army of Terror 240 pages

Then I read The Nazi and the Psychiatrist by Jack El-Hai which is about the psychiatrist who monitored the prisoners at Nuremberg. 240 pages pretty good.

That was in the span of about 4 weeks so I said fuck it no more reading and bought a ps4 last month instead. I have a stack of books I want to read but I'm also open to suggestions if you have something.

So if you're ever curious about what you are party to communicating read the pic, it was written in the 70's before British television adopted a more Americanized commercial paradigm. I assume TV follows pretty much the same formula in Poland.

Amusing Ourselves to Death is also a nice primer for understanding the ways mediums affect the conversations they facilitate.

http://monoskop.org/images/7/73/Kittler_Friedrich_Gramophone_Film_Typewriter.pdf

Granted these texts get more into the nature of the relationship between humans and technology generally. But if they, or you for that matter, has a serious desire to understand the impact your technical work has on the human condition generally, definitely chek them out.

Please do, I'm a media studies guy that places a great deal of value on having a working understanding of the technical side of the mediums I'm examining. I'd be grateful if you could pass on these texts, the content analysis side of the field gets so much more attention and offers so little comparative insight. Plus if you're feeling like they don't have to study as hard as you, you won't after passing them Kittler and Stiegler (mostly Stiegler though, French philosophers are notorious for their impenetrable prose).

I'd offer you the sources I used to learn about the operating electronic components, as well as analog and digital circuitry, but it came mostly from 40+ year old textbooks I got a library book sales.

Just finished this last night. Took me a long time to read, I started in the summer

It was interesting seeing how some of his predictions have panned out. Hofstadter predicted that no computer program would beat a human in chess until it developed the cognitive abilities resembling that of a human chess player. That was in 1982, and deep blue ended up beating the world grand master in chess in 1997. Amazing how quickly things happen

I've gotten about 1/3 into that book, it is very difficult. Is it worth it?

In any case you should check out David Copes book 'Algorithmic Music', he created an AI program that creates piano compositions based on a sample of a composers music. Hofstadter helped by submitting a number of his compositions, and then playing a selection of his and those composed by the formulas in front of an academic audience (in addition to a similar selection of Chopin). They couldn't tell the difference.

http://www.computerhistory.org/atchm/algorithmic-music-david-cope-and-emi/

I'm not sure if everything I've said is backed up by this article, but I've read several of Cope's books. More confirmation will take time.

>>
>>51633566
Yeah, that section is tough. he's laying out the mechanisms needed for an intuition of Godel's incompleteness theorem which happens in chapter 14. After that, he talks about some of the implication of indirect self reference (i.e. talking about one's self without using the words "I" or "me"). The last 6 chapters of the book were the most illuminating for me.

I'll definitely check out that article. He talks in the later section of the book about who would be the composer of an algorithmic music program's music, the program or the programmer. And at what point the program could be considered to have "written" the music. I guess that was all from personal experience! Thanks for the link

I know Dreyfus isn't popular in the AI community, but damnit if he hasn't been a lot more right about the progress of AI so far. I've had a Comp Sci professor, respected and very published in his field, talk about having AI friends as close as human ones within the decade. That's bullshit, and Dreyfuss helps explain why.
