What would happen if Turkey closed the Straits, but had behind the scenes support from a few NATO powers? I know Russia could attack Turkey without triggering automatic war with the rest of NATO, but what if Brit/USA came in to support Turks anyway? Article 5 only gets invoked if a Nato member is attacked, so if Turkey strikes first they aren't getting any help. That includes Turkey closing the Straits is an act of war and they would get no help when Russia invades or attacks them.
If Russia struck Turkey first for whatever reason then Article 5 would be invoked automatically, as it would be an unprovoked attack on a Nato member. But even then the US, UK and France would probably not fight Russia, they would fulfil their military obligations by sending 'advisors', supplies and maybe some special forces.
In short there is no way the West is going to fight a full scale war with Russia for Turkey.
