The level of hypocrisy .

I was working as a teacher at an American school in Brussels. The day before Thanksgiving we all received an email from the chief-secretary and we were asked to say who would eat turkey and who was vegetarian, so that we could be served our desired dish at the Thanksgiving dinner.

Right after this email, another email came which informed us that a dog was found in the campus, and they were asking if it belonged to any of the staff members. I wanted to be funny so I replied to all " I don't know who's the dog is but we could eat it along with the turkeys tomorrow!". When my chink colleague read my email, he told me: "Recall your email immediately! No one is going to talk to you anymore after this!". I was a bit shocked because it was obviously meant as a joke but I found it ridiculous to recall an already sent email, because recalling it doesn't mean that one cannot read it, it just means that one has to disregard it.

Indeed, a while later I received an email from the school's "ethics responsible". She wrote me: "From your name I can tell that you are Asian. As I am married with an Asian myself, I am in position to know that Asians have no respect for animals. I would like to tell you that this kind of jokes is inappropriate in our community. ".

My answer to her: "I indeed am an Asian and I don't know if Asians have no respect for animals, but they surely have a sense of humor. I am sorry to hear that you don't. ". And she writes back: "You missed the point...".

I realized that it was indeed pointless to answer back. I am still missing the point there. We are entitled to mass-massacre poor turkeys to stuff for Thanksgiving, we were allowed to openly communicate this in our community, but an obvious joke about a dog was inappropriate. Not "a bad joke", not "a silly joke". With any of these I could concede. But "inappropriate" to the point to alert the "ethics responsible"... Well, in my ethics code, this is called hypocrisy.

Planes are pretty good in a country as big as America.
People only want to go from East-West coast, having train lines and stations running across such a big empty space would require silly money and stations in bumfuck towns.

If America was similarly densely populated as Europe, Trains would work.

That's part of the problem with the high speed rail project in California. It's supposed to go from Los Angeles to San Francisco but is going to go through a bunch of bumfuck towns and be super expensive when it's not that bad to just fly between them ( takes like an hour)

America is so big and varied that one state might feel as it is in a completely different country compared to another.

So if you come and visit, there's bound to be a place that will suit you.
>>
>>51608494
In our defense, as far as I know no new-world country does anyways. Australia and NZ don't have high-speed (at least as far as a brief google search seems to show), neither does Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico etc. I'm thinking the sheer density of western Europe is the main factor

I'm guessing the main economic argument is Density x Wealth to make it profitable.

That if you have a basic HMO which is just a few dollars a month, your health care coverage and quality of it is better than what people who live in single payer usage countries get for 9/10 common illnesses.

I had spine fusion re-do surgery this year and they charged 40,000 for a 3 day stay at the hospital. My dad and I are panicking about how much will be covered, the spine institute is being very shady about it, it could be no charge or anything in between.

Also I go to a pain clinic for pain drugs for my back too, they did a cheek-swab DNA test back in february at some experimental lab, claimed it was covered, now they're trying to charge 4k for it, but the clinic is claiming it's illegal for them to charge anything for an experimental trial (it was a DNA study on how genes effect pain drugs)

Shits bad, they add chlorine and flouride to water here.

You can get a reverse-osmosis filter to clean it though.

Also that's not really the worst, the worst is apparently hormones flushed down the toilet by women, like birth control pills. The xenoestrogens that accidentally get in the water don't get filtered out.

Abe caught a terrible cold when he was in the USA, and then he said Japan is really good country for civilians.

In Japan, cost of an appendectomy is total 1000 $ or less. Because Japan has national health insurance, American tax is higher than Japan if you're not so rich.

Hypocrisy is the wrong word but it is true that Americans are much more sensitive to what many other people would just consider jokes and it is indeed a fact that most people here can't handle the banter.

If there's one thing Americans like more than burgers it's being offended by something. That's why clickbait sites reign supreme and the vast majority of political discussions you would have with anyone just involve being upset with whatever outrageous thing the other side of the false dichotomy is doing.

It's not always as bad as what you're describing but even among people that I usually joke around with there's sometimes a higher level of sensitivity than I would expect.

They do that everywhere in the developed world. Chloride to kill bacteria, fluoride to prevent tooth decay in the general population.
>>
>>51611010
He didn't imply that he was talking about travelling from NY to LA.
>>
>>51610712
This. It's not even the fact that it's hard to make jokes with people with out offending them over something trivial, but it makes it really difficult to communicate.

From personal experience, I am a manager at a store and if I say something to employees like "Don't sit around doing nothing because you're going to get written up" (that's it) they'll complain to the hiring managers that I was being rude and I'll be the one that gets talked to.

But I've noticed it even among friends. If I am with more white friends we'll make jokes about pretty much every race but when a joke is made about them they shut down. Likewise with my friends of other races. You can hardly say ANYTHING with out people taking it personally.

Our listed prices on websites and in stores never include sales tax (our equivalent to VAT). Instead, you see the total sales tax on its own line, followed by the total price, during checkout.

The biggest reason for this is that there are four levels to sales tax, and the US has no national sales tax. Where I live, the state has a 6.25% sales tax, the county charges no sales tax, but the city has a 2% sales tax, so I see the 8.25% sales tax only when I'm checking out, that way I can see precisely how much money the various levels of government are reaching into my pocket and taking.
>>
>>51611709
We include the tax cut on the bill as well, the only difference is that our price tags are always including tax. Shitty excuse to jew costumers imo
>>
>>51611092
Actually most developed countries don't put fluoride in their drinking water. Most countries in Europe don't.
>>
>>51608663
Lolno

Canada also consideres themselves a great poltical and cultural experiment, particularly in terms of diversity.
>>
>>51611709
This varies a lot between states and even websites. For example Arizona recently made internet sales taxable but before that anything I ordered online had no tax, and there are still some websites that don't charge me any sales tax.
>>
>>51611981
Kinda like how Europe banned a chemical Americans used in bread because the EU believes that a chemical resulting from its breakdown in the body has a link to cancer, even though that only happened in male mice, when it didn't happen in female mice nor in either gender of rat, and when it DID have that link to cancer in male mice it only did so after giving the poor rodent several times more of the stuff than a human could proportionately get by eating bread?
>>
>>51611981
Fluoride in toothpaste does the job better anyway with a lot less hassle
>>
>>51611860
America was supposedly founded on hating taxes, we deplore them. It's why we don't have free healthcare or education, it would require more taxes. No store in America wants to be associated with taxes, they show you their "low" prices, and then when you get to the register you can blame the government for charging more.

It's kind of weird Tbh
>>
>>51612013
Be careful, because use tax might still be charged on online purchases, and it won't show up as sales tax.

>>51612114

This is what I find funny about the staunch defenders of tipping in the US. Because it's really a service tax where instead of having a flat amount added to each dish price to cover the servers, you're expected to pay a percentage of how expensive your meal was. It seems to clash with America's anti-socialist ideas.
>>
>>51609809
I think he means the other way around. Here they open outwards.
>>
>>51613431

Well, since you used the "T" word, the thread is dead.

However, you're wrong, it doesn't clash at all. What tips allow is for good servers to make better money by providing a better service. A microcosm of capitalism really.

You europoors like to pretend to be all high and mighty about how you "pay your waiters a fair wage" and blah blah blah, but the simple reality is that you only CAP the amount your waiters can earn at a measly ~10$/hour, whereas a server in the US can quite easily double that.

One of my friends works as a waitress, and will generally clear around $25+/hr during the busy months.
>>
>>51613431
The only people who want to get rid of tips are the ones who work at shitty places and gibsmedat "protesters". My buddies in NY easily clear upwards of 3/400 a night for a few hours of work.
>>
>>51610058
They really are shit though compared to Europe's
>>
>>51613431
Eh we still pay pretty damn high taxes, the biggest difference is that everything is a lot cheaper over here, but that's mostly because of the huge underclass of unskilled laborers we have that do everything for so cheap. I guess mass immigration and the death of the middle class is nice if you end up on the right side.
