Scandinavia was sparely populated(30k people living in the whole of Scandinavia under the height of the roman empire 1+million in Rome) and the people living there had no reason to start building stone structures due to trees being literally everywhere.
Before the "modern" era most places here was uninhabitable due to no water and swamps being everywhere, you could only live near shorelines without dying from malaria and other diseases. I won't mention how shitty the soil is here and the animals that used to plague our crops before we hunted them to extinction.
And to be completely honest I would rather live in a big wooden house made back then rather in a small roman villa or apartment with 20 people.
