Besides Hindi and English, I know basic Sanskrit and I can understand 50% Punjabi and Urdu (though both these have similarities with hindi).

Tbf I shouldn't even include Sanskrit there because I don't even remember most of the things that I learned. There are only a handful of Sanskrit speakers in India and one does not usually has the opportunity to brush up his knowledge of the language.
We used to have regular Sanskrit classes in school but nowadays the only time I come across it's use in daily life is when someone in my home is performing a puja.

Outside of india everyone considers them the same language with two writing systems.

Urdu is not that hard for me or for anyone who knows Hindi (although there are different types/dialects of Hindi; https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindi_languages).
Bollywood songs have throughout the decades made use of these 'loan words' so that has also helped in the understanding.

They would telling the truth because when I sometimes listen to Pakistani Urdu news, I can make out 95% of what is being said. It's only a few words that cause a problem.
As you pointed out, the writing system is the only major difference between the two languages.

Well they are different no matter how much they are similar. But the nationalists never take up language as a issue, they have religion for that.
Also, some people (including many prominent Pakistanis) claim that Urdu was never a language of the pre-partition Pakistan. It's use in the region increased manyfold due to the huge number Urdu speakers from mainland India migrating over to the newly formed Pakistani side. This resulted in the slow degradation of many of the local languages of the Sindh, Punjab and Tribal areas.
