Having lived in both I can safely say that South Korea is a middle developed growth economy that's still experiencing some growing pains, and the people are fairly backwards relative to North America and western Europe.
Japan on the other hand isn't remarkably different from Canada or Northern Europe, other than in terms cultural patrimony of course.

Teachers and scholars traditionally held the highest position in Korean society. Samurai and Daimyo held the highest positions in Japanese society. I don't see any samurais or daimyos these days.
