Why are many US places named after other places' name?
>>
The US has no culture so we must steal it from other countries.
>>

because people who founded the towns usually came from those places or they adopt biblical names.

Pretty much every town over here has a namesake in America, mine included

Same for Spain. They have tons of towns and cities with spanish origins.

The U.S is a relatively new culture and therefore must take from other cultures for its distinctiveness.
>>

lack of originality.

Some times it works out, carthage has a roman recreation every so often. It was pretty cool

Do British people ever go to, say, the signpost for Washington in Lincolnshire and take pictures of themselves making funny faces?

People tended to name new places after places they were from.

So you have not only a lot of old world place names, but also tons of towns named after other american cities. Someone from, say Springfield, would name a new town they found the same thing.

But there are also cases of places given trendy names. When ancient egypt was big you had places like Cairo Illinois (pronounced like kahrow though)
>>
It's a common thing in the New World, we also do that (besides the cities we name after saints and important people).

Non-native habitation of USA is very recent, and so everything is loanwords from the old country - which is everywhere, all at once.

Places closer to Mexico more often have Spanish names. "Los Angeles, San Francisco, Del Rio" are literally Spanish phrases.

Probably the most "original" names in America are the Native (Indian) names. Some of our states and rivers are named this way.

So our towns should just have made-up names like black people?

Stick with what works, I say.

What the fuck man??????

Just when I thought Americans couldn't be more fucking retarded...
>>
>>51610305
You do realize that they were probably founded by german immigrants from Hamburg, right?
>>
>>51611211
Then good fucking riddance
>>
>>51610305
This is the reason why we always address every city as "Hamburg, Germany" or "London, England." I've heard some folks from outside the US go, "What other 'Hamburg' or 'London' is there?" to which an American can reply, "Plenty."
