Depends on wether you're better at french or german I guess. German parts speak pretty good english. Don't know about the french part, haven't been there in years.

It's a fringe case I'd say, but it's not exactly on the level of something like Dutch and more on that of full-blown Bavarian. Not enough unique differences in vocabulary/grammar but mostly some regular cases and a pronunciation that superficially make it sound so different.
If I can understand people without taking any lessons (granted, that took some time) I'd argue against it being a separate language.
