Yes you bloody well can.

The UK had to ask for assistance from France, the US and others to check for submarines in our waters because we currently don't have a maritime patrol aircraft. Therefore I am right to judge our capabilities as deficient. Fortunately we are buying some MPAs now.

The Swiss problems are so much worse though. I mean you still have F-5s in service. You can't keep using ancient fighters when the airframe gets worn out. You urgently need upgrades in order to do something as basic as guard your own airspace.

Given Switzerland's location you don't need an army, or a navy, ALL you need is a functioning air force, therefore it's totally unacceptable that a country as rich as Switzerland can't even do that.

I know but you said you can't judge it - you can, if only by reading about the equipment online.

>I'd disagree with not needing an army.
You go the militia route, which isn't a proper army in my book. You have some professional elements in there but it's basically a militia. And that's fine because you have big meaty buffer states so there's essentially no land threat (maybe keeping out illegal immigrants, or refugees from a natural/humanitarian disaster).

It's really just the air that you have to worry about
>>
>>51568737
>It's really just the air that you have to worry about
Right now, sure. But those big meaty buffer states might not be so friendly fifty years from now, so it seems a bit dangerous to rely on them.
You're still right that we need to get our air force in order.
>>
>>51568961
During the Cold War you mined all your bridges and approaches from the east, you only removed them quite recently. Makes a land invasion very unappetising. I think anyone who wanted to make Switzerland submit would choose the air to attack, even if they were your neighbours.

Anyway I agree, if it was up to me I'd beef up your land forces too, especially if you take neutrality seriously. Armed neutrality is the only neutrality that works.
>>

The current doctrine is basically give guns to everyone and hope he kills 2 for his own life. Back in 1995 our army still had 400'000 active soldiers/reservists.

The issue is less that they're dumb, and more that the Officers see the enlisted as trash, while the senior enlisted see the junior enlisted as trash. I mean that happens in most militaries, but in Arab militaries it's to the point that Sergeants will refuse to teach their subordinates how to do their duties or allow them to have instructional materials. They completely refuse to share knowledge on operations.

If we would have a referendum tomorrow about our NATO membership and responsibility to defend other countries the opposing side would probably win with 70+%.

You think tornadoes are bad? I remember article which said only 8 out of 109 Eurofighters are combat worthy, while about 30 are airworthy

German mateinance and engineering is in terrible shape

The RAF has been carrying out 30% of the entire coalition's intelligence and recon flights (that's including the USA). That's a much bigger contribution than our size relative to the rest of the coalition.

Also our Brimstone missiles are probably the most accurate in the entire coalition arsenal

Not trying to bash you guys here, but I really don't get it where you guys spend all that money on. France and the UK can have carriers, better and more frigates, more support ships, better sealift, better and more subs, better and more fighters, better airlift with only a marginally bigger defense budget than Germany. Not even talking about the state of the army here.

Oh that's slightly different. You're not allowed to start a war of aggression. But you can still join allies in a war or frame something as a preventative war.

In other words you can do pretty much everything France does. E.g. if the government asks you for assistance (like with Mali) or the UN says it's ok (like Syria) then you're fine.

You're really not very restricted at all

You're so full of shit. Who's forcing you to go to Syria? No one. But you have the freedom to send the military if you want. Most military actions start by one side asking for help to fight another side, so you're not very restricted because Germany could get involved with any of that.

>>51573634
Are you implying the German government sending the 1200 troops to Syria might be illegal?!

>>51573592
>>51573637
A lot of Germany's military exports were because of huge Cold War surplus which allowed them to sell for cheap after the USSR fell, and get access to markets. Also the German military doesn't use as high-end equipment as other big western countries so they can sell to poorer countries easier.

E.g. no one can afford to buy an Astute class submarine but plenty of smaller countries can afford to buy a Type 212 sub. Compare the prices.

But if you look at actual SALES by defence industry then Germany does worse than the UK and France, pic related

That's funny.
1. Ariane is a European rocket. And the Viking rocket engine that laid the foundation of European space launch success was largely a child of Karl-Heinz Bringer, a member of Wernher von Brauns original Peenemünde team. And France crosssubsidizes its SLBM development through the ESA budget which is not just annoying but also hides some of the true cost of nukes by keeping it out of the military budget.

2. Germany operates lots of satellites. And with SAR-Lupe Germany became the third nation after USA and Russia to possess the ability for independent high resolution radar reconnaissance from space. The successor system SARah will be even more capable. Germany also operates military comsats and lots of civilian sats.

3. The nuke question was decided in the 60s. In any case, Germany, like many other industrial nations, could make nukes on a short notice if the need arises.

4. Nuclear subs go along with SLBMs and aren't needed if one doesn't operate those.

5. Carriers are the weapon of choice for fleet on fleet action. The only other use for them is expeditionary warfare which Germany, for obvious reasons, has some reservations about.
