1. We make loads of cars here, the British car industry is booming. Especially Japanese and German cars.
2. British commercial car company management in 70s was terrible so foreign owners were brought in, and that saved the British car industry
3. Much of the high end (Formula 1) and luxury stuff is still based in the UK
In general the UK concentrates on high end manufacturing such as engines, turbines, and so on. Stuff that most other countries can't do. And we're competitive with the countries that can.
