Tipping isn't that unusual around the world. the difference is that it's intended to be for doing your job well, not for doing your job.
We're just more honest with display prices in general, writing a lower-than-de-facto price on the menu because of factually mandatory tips and waiters only making $3 per hour from the employer is false advertising desu. Same goes for not displaying prices including the VAT in malls, which would be illegal here. Both a result of your excessive consumerism, people are being tricked into buying more than they can afford

In developed countries, the price of the food includes a service charge and the workers all get paid a proper wage. Although if you're not paying by card, then it's not uncommon to just give notes and let them keep the change.
Also by making the tip optional, the worker actually feels a lot more grateful when people do tip. I ordered a pizza yesterday and it came to £17.61. I gave him a £20 note and told him to only give £2 back. He seemed really grateful, even though it was only 49p (which is absolutely nothing), he said that students rarely ever give them tips.
