This hardly makes sense. Americans have no need to learn French or learn "about the French." Your political affairs and business happenings don't affect ordinary people at a noticeably personal level in the slightest. However, Spanish is widely spoken in most urban areas and we share a border with a country that has over one hundred million Spanish speakers. This is a conversation in which needs are based on proximity rather than privilege.
It's easier for us to learn Spanish because we have more opportunities and reasons to apply it versus French. A person who learns French in high school or college isn't liable to ever use the language outside of vacation or unless they get a job in Paris or as a translator. On the other hand, it'd be much easier to find a position for work in the United States that requires or prefers candidates who are proficient in Spanish.
