Yeah, anything that I say about mexico is statistics only since I've never been there.
But here in Brazil if you don't live in a bad neighborhood you are pretty much safe. My town had 12 homicides in a single day in november! but while the bad neighborhoods were borderline war zone, we all just kept our normal lives. I never fear for my life when walking at night, I mostly just fear for my iphone.
