To its immense chagrin and surprise, it discovered that neither the masses nor the elites took to the idea. President Mircea Snegur, a one-time communist apparatchik, now the main nation-builder, struck a chord with his talk of being "ethnically Romanian and politically Moldovan." Despite the overthrow of the brutal Ceau_escu dictatorship in December 1989, Romania was no rose garden, either economically or politically. Moldovans who were old enough also remembered that during the interwar period Bucharest had treated their region as a backwater worthy of little but neglect. Then, too, many Moldovan intellectuals and politicians who had received prestigious posts under the new state realized that unification would be a bad career move.
