used to rule us, wishing they still had
Units of the US Army were in the Austrian city of Linz on May 8. Captain Milton Cahn, in charge of a medical company of five officers and 120 enlisted men, recalled how he'd just been ordered to "set up a command to evacuate the camps and hospitals from Innsbruck to Vienna. I had absolute control of the situation and the first thing I did was go to Linz where there was a large contingent of Jews who were about to be taken to Mauthausen. The US government in its infinite wisdom (read: stupidity) had ordered all internees to be repatriated to their country of origin (Poland, Lithuania, Russia, etc) where they knew they would not receive a warm welcome." In fact, the concentration camp inmates were not forcibly repatriated although they could go back to Eastern Europe if they wished (some did) or they could stay where they were in their Displaced Persons camps, living on Red Cross rations, while agents of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency, UNRRA, worked over the next several years to obtain permission for them to enter the countries of their choice, predominately the United States.
Cahn and his men found several store rooms in Linz "packed with Red Cross parcels, never dispensed, and we broke open the lockers and distributed them to the survivors. We were also able to get equipment and materials to forge Italian passports and later, I ordered up a train and we sent those people to Italy where a sympathetic colonel helped them get to Palestine. I was age 27 at the time and it took me five months to clear up the mess, but I left feeling good!"
The end of the war for Captain Cahn came, as for so many other Americans, after a long and gruelling forward march which in Cahn's case, had begun all the way back at Normandy 11 months earlier. Every step of the journey was remembered, the evacuation of the wounded and the liberation of Europe, in a line on the map - "Omaha Beach, Caen, St. Lo, Le Mans, Chartres, Reims, Bar de Luc, Epinal, Luneville, Nancy, Metz, Ludwigshafen, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Munich, Oberammergau, Garmisch Partenkirchen, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Linz". Austria itself had not experienced any fighting on its soil and as Cahn recalled, "no destruction and little evidence of war". At least, until he reached Vienna which had been occupied and thoroughly ransacked by the Red Army. Elsewhere, life went on as usual. "I remember concerts starting up in Salzburg almost immediately."
In Vienna, the city's top clergyman, Cardinal Innitzer, who had welcomed Hitler into the city in 1938, now held a Mass celebrating the defeat of Nazi Germany. Austrian fears of being trapped on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain proved unfounded. Stalin had no interest in adding the country to his sphere of influence and agreed to the Allied plan to create four occupation zones. Austria remained occupied for ten years. In May 1955, the occupation officially ended and Austria's political independence was restored. The following October, Austria declared her permanent neutrality.

One of the more tragic blunders in WWII was the Allied repatriation of hundreds of people to Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union where they were immediately arrested/shot/deported to labor camps.

Austria is Habsburg, so our identity is just as much not being austrian as it is not being german.
Austrians are bro tier, they know how to start a war. Maybe they'll kick off the happenings in the near future.
