not full blood, and neither is my wife, but she was and is a tribal member/citizen so I married in more or less.
By blood she's half, and i'm probably like 1/8th, but I'm really only involved with her community. For all intents and purposes she's the native and i'm some white guy she married. But the Iroquois are traditionally matrilineal and her family has had no problem with my whiteness. The communities are small, to avoid marrying your cousin its totally not uncommon to marry non natives. I mean we met in college, its almost expected that kids from the community who go away end up not marrying someone in the community. But as long as we go back for ceremonies and holidays and stuff everyone seems totally happy. I know her family would love for us to settle back there when we start a family but it depends on work and stuff.

there are about 3,000 speakers of mohawk, which is what my wife is. They have an immersion school up in akwesasne which is pretty cool. There are about 30,000 mohawk so 10% native speakers isnt so bad. Its fairing a lot better than the other iroquoian languages, Seneca Cayuga Oneida and Onondaga are essentially extinct.

I'm certainly not entirely native, and i don't think my wife is "entirely native" But just like any modern society intermarriages happen. Its less about blood (which is a hard thing for /int/ to accept) and more about your level of involvement in the community 2bh. I mean there are truly full blood natives who move off the reserve, don't speak the language, and don't keep any of the traditions. They're just red skinned americans. Say what you will but it seems pretty reasonable to me.

I'm not sure. It certainly gets muddy when you're in by marriage. My work will almost certainly prevent us from ever living on the reserve, and even if it did, the reserve is kind of shitty. I guess we'd cross that bridge if t ever came up. I'm certainly not in it to dodge taxes or get any benefits from tribal affiliation. Hell my wife didnt even use native status to get financial aid or anything in college. Like I said above, its her culture and now that we're married its our culture. Our kids eventually will grow up in both, same way I grew up in both my parent's traditions. Christmas eve with Mom's family eating bear sausage and venison stew, singing songs in Kanien’keha'. And christmas day with Dad's family eating Acadian food and singing french christmas songs, you know? I guess i'm not a cultural purist but thats kind of the way things go in America no?
I have lived near Natives my whole life. The ones that don't live on the rez are fine, but reservation Indians tend towards the fat, drunk, and diabetic side of the scale.
