We're forbidden to put our forehead on anything but clean earth during prayer, otherwise the prayer is invalid. Turbahs or clay tablets are carried because people need to make sure the earth they're praying on is pure. Also, earth taken from Mecca, Karbala, Mashad and other holy places is believed to make God more likely to answer one's prayer and with added blessing.

Sunni caliphs claims to political authority always rested on shaky grounds, so some of their scholars sought to devise a system of thought intended to turn the masses into ignorant sheep who would not question such authority. The Asharites also eventually gained the upper hand over the Mutazilites. While the Mutazilites were not quite on the right path, the Sunni world would have probably been better off had they won instead. The Asharites promulgated a doctrine of predestination which taught individual effort had nothing to do with one's salvation and that the state one was in was something they had no power to change if they found it hard or unjust. It also allowed Sunnis to justify the claims of the caliphates a lot more easily. Shi'ites believe the only real "caliph" is the present Imam, which allows for some negotiation in the area of temporal authority and the degree to which clergy can exercise involvement in people's, particularly monarchs', private affairs. Sunnis also became insulated and stagnant, which is partly to blame for their current situation where most of their lands are polluted by secularism, wahabism and other nonsense which emerged among the Sunni laity in reaction to the traditional Sunni ulama's lack of response to modernism and modern circumstances and just their general close-mindedness. Now, the Sunnis don't even know who they are. Even though Khomeini was what we might call a (Shi'ite) fundamentalist, he was far less so than the Wahabi scum who rule Saudi Arabia or the Satanic State of Iraq and Syria who are hellbent on destroying the last vestiges of Sunni and all Islamic civilization.
