What's the origin of the flag? When I see that shape my first thought is the East India Company but I doubt there's any connection here.

A guy called Júlio Ribeiro created the flag, but he wanted it to be the flag of Brazil.
He didn't specified the number of the stripes, but somehow the flag got 13 stripes, maybe to remember the American flag.
