There are so many greater cities than Toronto in North America, I can't even imagine how many would need to be nuked before Toronto was even in the running for "great" city

For goodness' sake, it has a smaller metro population than Houston and only slightly more culture, which is a really low bar
>>
In no particular order, a list of better cities:
1. New York
2. Chicago
3. Boston
4. San Francisco
5. Seattle
6. Dallas
7. Houston
8. Kansas City
9. St. Louis
10. Washington, D.C.
11. Miami
12. San Diego
13. Salt Lake City
14. Denver

I'm willing to consider that Toronto might be the 15th greatest city in North America.

Honnestly Toronto is just one big suburb, like most north american cities except NYC, san francisco, boston etc.
Your downtown is literally lifeless past 6pm when everyone's in their car commuting in traffic for hours to get back to their little home.
Public transit is antrocious, worst than vancouver's.
Nightlife is shitty, last call for booze in clubs is around 1-2am (lmao)

Despite all the memers on here, Melbourne is nice. Has lots of well preserved colonial/victorian architecture. Sydney's worth a visit too.
>>
>>51132488
The one thing that always kind of got me was how Australia ranks consistently the highest for livable cities. Now don't get me wrong, Australian cities are clean and modern as fuck, but it just seems like the cities "proper" are just filled with parking garages and stale office buildings and the cities outside of Melbourne aren't very walkable desu. The most livable cities I have every seen are probably German ones desu.

Thats more like American cities. The Central Business districts of our major cities are usually quite walkable and have plenty to do. Also, aside from Sydney they don't shut down at night because a lot of people actually live there as well.
>>
>>51132582
Yeah Melbourne was nice, if a bit too "ethnic" than what I was expecting for Australia. Perth and Brisbane were absolutely soulless and boring as fuck, but I wouldn't mind living because the cities had some nice green space though. Sydney was kind of a disappointment but I am glad I went though. Could use a better public transit system desu

>public transport
Thats one of the main gripes I have about Sydney. It's because the rich nimbys blocked lots of railway developments back in the 70's/80's in the fear that it would attract poor people to their suburbs. Melbourne's geography is also much more conducive various sorts of public transport, so we've traditionally invested more into it.
>>
>>51131822
When most people think of Toronto, I am pretty sure that they just picture Chicago and replace the nice architecture with shit internationalist/post-modern stuff and erase a few million people. Also, remove history

Yep, Melbourne is about to construct a new metro line and is also modernising the existing infrastructure to increase hourly carrying capacity. I'm also excited for next year; we'll be joining the few cities in the world to have 24/7 trains (and trams, buses etc). Quite impressive for a city of our size I think.
>>
>>51131299
>tfw I've only lived in dark green areas because I'm poor.
Acutally, I don't even mind it. Some of the nicest people I've ever met were immigrant housemates. I've lived with recent immigrants from Iran, India, Saudia Ariabia, Jordan, China, Pakistan... but the worst housemates were all low-income white people.
Last week my Iranian housemate made me eat a bunch of boiled turnips and drink lime-honey tea because I was sick. It didn't do anything, but it was a nice gesture.

In order to run more commuter trains where I live, they need to expand the yard to fit more tracks, and even though the agency already owns the land, and it isn't developed at all, people are flipping their shit, and some politicians are trying to get them to stop. It's funny, because then they'll complain that there aren't enough trains. Thank god they're still going through with it, I'd be pissed if they didn't.

>>
>>51133294
I don't know the details beyond
"There is no question that a GM-controlled entity called National City Lines did buy a number of municipal trolley car systems. And it's beyond doubt that, before too many years went by, those street car operations were closed down. It's also true that GM was convicted in a post-war trial of conspiring to monopolize the market for transportation equipment and supplies sold to local bus companies. "
>>
>>51133256
I was talking about America not Europe but OK.

Yes the GM streetcar buyup and sell-out happened but a lot of cities are coming back though.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_rail_in_the_United_States#List_of_light_rail_systems_operating_in_the_United_States
34 cities in this list. Granted most of these systems aren't as large as Toronto's though.

If you value comfort above all else then yes, another Canadian city would be a reasonable substitute by your metric. This is enough to validate me. But OP's prompt was "greatest". This implies notions like alpha, world-consequence, long-term historical consequence - at least in the recent relevant (European) history of North America.

Our own red-staters may resent the admission, but New York is an obvious first choice. I would be interested to see head-to-head data between LA, Chicago, DC and Toronto.

Canada, you are my best friend, and I love you. But come on. It's 2015 brah
>>
>>51133319
That happened in California. In Chicago the streetcars were around until 1960. No one wanted to buy a failing business though
>>
I used to like Toronto, but that was before I came to live here.

If this is the best city in the world, I can't even imagine how other cities are.

This type of thinking is why US cities are a mess. Having a streetcar line as opposed to a bus line adds a higher value to the area because they're more comfortable and classier modes of transport, imo.

I lived in Tampa, Florida in a suburb in the middle of nowhere. It was terrible and I wouldn't wish it on anybody the closest thing to me was a trailer park 6km away. It isn't too bad, I work a good amount of overtime, but it's because I want to not because I have to. The prices may seem high when you don't live here, but it isn't much if you have a decent job.
