Thats one of the main gripes I have about Sydney. It's because the rich nimbys blocked lots of railway developments back in the 70's/80's in the fear that it would attract poor people to their suburbs. Melbourne's geography is also much more conducive various sorts of public transport, so we've traditionally invested more into it.

I lived in Tampa, Florida in a suburb in the middle of nowhere. It was terrible and I wouldn't wish it on anybody the closest thing to me was a trailer park 6km away. It isn't too bad, I work a good amount of overtime, but it's because I want to not because I have to. The prices may seem high when you don't live here, but it isn't much if you have a decent job. I'm a package delivery man and I live in a nice neighborhood and don't have any debt.
