Scandinavia does not experience true winter. Unless you're either Canadian, Russian, from Alaska or have visited Antarctica, you have never felt winter.

not here :D
>>
>>51077148
The Western and South-Western parts are affected by Gulf stream and get noticeably warmer, while Canada is more sheltered from it over all. Still, the inland parts have continental climate similar to that of Canada, only wetter and with heavier snowfall.
>>

Also, the winters are pretty comfy. The cold is not so bad unless you work outside, but the constant darkness kinda gets to you after a while.

Weeks without any sun is pretty bad. Even further south, it is dark outside when you go to work, and dark outside when you get home.
>>
>>51077618
What do you mean? It's not THAT much more continental here than in the UK, maybe summers are like 1-2°C warmer and winter 1-2°C colder (at least on the Rhine), maybe our East is a bit more extreme but not much.
Oceanic influence in Europe extends much farther to the East than it does in America, because we have no huge mountains like the Rockies blocking it

On this note, in which different countries/states/provinces in the world do block heaters come standard in all vehicles?

I don't imagine a car bought in Italy would come with them, but I'd assume Swedish and Norwegian cars do. How about Danish? Denmark is quite mild if I remember correctly.

>>
>>51078746
>>51078779
What do you consider real winter?-40?
>>
>>51078679
Well on rare cases you can have it colder in winter, probably when some icy shit moves in via Western winds and reaches us 1-2 days later, and indeed it's supposed to go down to -1 on Monday
>>51078709
Are you in some place >1500m altitude in the Atlas mountains?
>>
>>51078821
It has to do with both temperature and population distribution. It can reach as low as -40 in Sweden, but only in far northern towns with only a few thousand people. In Western Canada, cities of over a million people get that cold and colder.
>>
>>51076974
I guess it's pretty cool.
>>
>>51078822
Only 700m.

And in the northern Algeria lower altitudes actually mean cooler summers (and warmer winters). The high plateaux get a ton of snow and ice in winter but become pretty hot in summer. The coast has your standard mediterranean climate, wet and mild.
>>
It's not cold where I live but I hate the darkness
>>
>>51078973
>but only in far northern towns with only a few thousand people

More like tens of thousands, or nearly 100k.
But whatever, I guess my winters do not count because Stockholm is mostly warm.

More like Canada does not have real winters, you southern cunts, since you still get sunlight.

He is Canadian, so his imaginary -50 winters (with "Windchill"), is his only point of pride.

I am starting to suspect it is always the same guy that goes into every thread about winter to begin crying about how only his winters are real.
>>
>>51079236
Outside of the tropics, people generally tend to relatively warmer places. Even here where internal differences aren't that strong, it sill shows. The Rhineland with annual mean temps of +11 is chocke full, while the cooler places like MVP (+8) are mostly empty
In Finland (also Norway) too most live on the mild coasts

Depends on where you live and your life situation. They can be really good, you can get snow and do crosscountry skiing every day if you live the right places. While the temperatures are still high enough that it doesn't get uncomfortably cold, just a little bit less than zero.

In Oslo, there may not be a lot of snow, in the city centre only a few weeks in bad years. But our metro leads up in the hills where there will be deep snow for many months, so skiing is still avaible.

But of course, as I said, depends on your life situation as well as where you live. I don't have any friends to be with, so to me it doesn't matter much, because I'll just be lonely at home in front of my computer. Winter just means that it takes a couple of minutes longer to go where you want, and the occasional delay in public transport. Oh, and it's dark all the time during weekdays. In weekends you can get sunlight, though.
>>
>>51079236
>What population distribution has to do with winter?

Nothing. It is one of two contributing factors in determining whether the inhabitants of a certain country experience winter, however, the second obviously being the weather itself. Inland Alaska is very cold, for instance, but that doesn't mean folks in Florida are acclimatized to extreme cold, even though they live in the same country.

>>51079192
>More like tens of thousands, or nearly 100k.

What is the coldest Swedish city of over 100,000 people? Uppsala? Never broke -40. Kiruna has broken -40 before, but it has less than 20,000 people. The coldest Norwegian town, Karasjok, once broke -50—and has less than three thousand inhabitants. Compare Kiruna or Karasjok to Edmonton or Winnipeg, cities of equivalent extreme colds that house over a million people each.

>>51079204
Latitude doesn't determine temperature. You can display that even by looking just at Europe.

>i bet you even live near the american border

True. Only about a thousand kilometres away. Europeans would probably considerable that an appreciable distance, however.

>>51079339
>imaginary -50 winters (with "Windchill")

-50 is without wind-chill, -60 is with. But we're not involving wind-chill at all here. Just looking at plain air temperature.
>>
>>51080103
Most of you live around Vancouver or Ontario (latter one is fucking subtropical) though, where it's very mild. And that's only natural as I explained here >>51079350

>>

>>
>>51080219
I'm not talking about the Canadian Arctic. The two cities I mentioned are both nowhere near the Arctic and have over a million people each, but are still colder than Scandinavia.

>>

>There is more to Ontario than Toronto
Liar.
>>
>>51080103
You can't look at the extreme temperatures, though, they are exceptions and is determined only by chance. You have to look at what actually happens to see what people are used to.

Not saying Norway is colder than Canada, but if Oslo suddeny got -50, that wouldn't mean anything, because that's not what usually happens, it's just an extreme. Oslo is probably not a cold city by Canadian standards, but most years the temperature is lower than -10, and every few years it'll be colder than -20. These are the kinds of numbers you have to look at.

>>
>>51080310
I mean it extends down to 41°N (below fucking Rome) and has moderating Great Lakes effect, and as soon as it has July means above 22°C, it's by definition subtropical
>>51080361
Yeah maybe you have more cities >100k where it freezes, but then again you're 4x as big population-wise as Sweden, so in the end it evens out
>>
>>51077041

Fuck you, we do experience true winters even if yours are colder. Instead, you can tell that to those who call it winter when the average January temperature is +5C and it only snows once or twice a year.

>>
Idyllic winter snow is a lie.
It's just slush.
>>
>>51080417
Okay, let's compare monthly averages then, instead of extreme colds. Oslo, with about a million people in the metropolitan area, has an average low in January of -6.8°C. Winnipeg, with a population of about a million, has an average low in January of -21.4°C.

The next largest city in Norway, Bergen, has an average low below freezing in only a single month, February, when the average low is an extremely temperate -0.1°C. Just barely enough to freeze water.
>>
>>51080499
Ontario is about 3 times the size of Germany. The majority of it is far above 41°N
>>
>>51080564
The perfect snow only occurs in a very narrow temperature range. Too warm and it's slush, too cold and it's dust.
>>
>>51076974

>>51080706

>>
>>51080499
I'm going to be fair and say that Western Canada, specifically the Prairies, is the only part of Canada (besides the Territories) that's truly cold. Ontario and eastward are all very mild, though with extreme amounts of snow admittedly. British Columbia doesn't approach cold at all.

That's much more useful for comparison. It seems that Canada has a bigger city with low temperatures than Norway.

However, the comparison may still not be fair. I don't know exactly how population patterns in Canada are. If most people live in big cities, and you transfer that pattern to Norway, it may not be fair if Norway has a bigger population in smaller towns. If this is the case, the comparion can not be used to tell how an average citizen lives, or a what's a realistic life for a randomly chosen person. It depends on how people in Canada are spread compared to Norway.
>>
Friendly reminder that if you don't have at least one month with an average temperature below freezing, you don't have a winter.
>>
>>51080103
Umeå and Luleå both had -40 with around 75k each. It is not common, but it happens. Average low around -14.
Yeah, Winnipeg is a bit colder on average, not going to argue that. Inland weather with colder winters and warmer summers. Keep in mind that Canada has like 4 times the population when talking city sizes.

If your argument is that most of Swedes do not experience real winters, you are correct. But a large part of Sweden does. Also, the darkness adds a lot. -25 for weeks with no sun makes you pretty depressed.

Norway is 20% rural. Canada is 18% rural. The Canadian provinces with the highest rural populations are also the coldest provinces, the Prairies, due to agricultural roots. I'd say Norway and Canada are more or less equivalent when it comes to the rural-urban divide.

What you eat at christmas is as far as your culture goes. Sweden and Norway are literally USA. Having one special food during christmas is not enough to make a culture.

You have a nice snow cover for 3-4 months, while here it's almost always slightly above freezing in winter so it's all grey brown and muddy

It's a valley(400m) surrounded by small mountains in a somewhat high plateau in northern Portugal, that's why we get chilly nights in summer

Yeah, valleys often act as cold sink. I'm living on a south-facing hill at 230m, and often in clear winter nights it's a couple degrees cooler down in the valley at 110m, where the little stream flows (pic related)

I'm not sure if the grass here has frost, there's a layer of snow on top. Will check once it melts away.

Feels like this is gonna be a good winter.

It's great, the only bad part is shoveling and plowing it.And it's only bad when the temperature hovers around freezing. Then it can get compressed by feet and tires, melts a little, and then refreezes into a sheet of ice.
>>
>>51085660
And to add, aren't a lot of the roads and streets in Rome cobblestone? That stuff's slippery.

the cold is bullshit, who cares about that. below -15 or so is when it starts getting really lame outside.

what's important is how snowy it is. the best blizzards never happen during -30 weather anyway.
