I'm a red-blooded African American college student from a pretty well-to-do family studying in Finland this year.
I have a well paying Nanoengineering research position and comfortable residual trust fund security from home. Most of my friends here are not well off though.
I wear a suit every day, which already makes me stand out, and I love watches. I've been collecting watches for the past few years. My questions are these:
Is it inappropriate for a student to wear a high end watch in Finland? Does it matter if it's a more expensive watch than what the Doctor whose lab I'm working in has or those of my professors?
I feel like I need to strike a balance between the conservatism of my life in, and the culture of, scientific research and reflecting my personal style and social status.
Thank you in advance to anyone who replies. I wasn't quite sure if this would be the best place to post this, but here goes...

Depends.. Which social group do you associate / wish to associate with? If it's other students then showing of your wealth may not be a very good idea. Also wearing a suit to start with is very odd for a student and not really the culture. Finnish people traditionally rather hide their wealth rather than show it. Also, no one will know the value of your watch unless you tell them.

It's just the way I was raised. Wearing a suit has saved me from a lot of potentially bad situations back home. I guess I'll have to dress down to blend in over here since the culture is quite different.

I thought about buying a smartwatch, at least it does something interesting, but when I talked with people who tried those, it never really works and the usability kind of sucks, and it has shit battery life

I don't know if it is the case in Finland, but in Norway that is a huge no, so I assume it's the same in Finland. Of course you can dress nice, or have a nice car, or whatever suits you, but you're never supposed to show off.
