I know of some Europeans who adore living in Jamaica, one in particular was from Norway and he said he wanted to die here. Look, I'm as inclined as you are to be a spergy sweating idiot, but because of the recession, I had to take a job as a salesman, and through it, I learned how to establish a rapport with people I didn't really care about, or didn't need to know.
The critical thing to remember is that nobody actually cares what the conversation is about, it's merely a medium for evaluating someone's personality. Use an animated tone of voice, nod while they talk, use eye contact, express facially, and be conscious of bodylanguage. Laugh when they make a joke, be mildly self-deprecating (but not too much). It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it. The people to study are older professional men, they have it down perfectly. The clap on the shoulder, the handshake, the tone of voice, and the manner. Now, you don't have to do that, but by watching them, you get the point. It's about making everybody your friend.
Now. Why bother? What does this get you? Well,
