Eltsin who promised a lot but couldn't care less about fulfilling any of these promises was viewed by public as a weak leader and the US puppet who doesn't give a shit about the country. The first Chechen campaign didn't end well too, adding to the humiliation.

One is the gradual method, where the liberalization is being done one step at a time. That's the method China adopted since 1976, gradually reforming to a market economy of today. Russia, along with Poland, took the instant method with rapid liberalization which devalued the ruble which had a huge negative impact on the general population. The instant method was a success in Poland. It all depends on the country as every country is specific. Maybe Russia should have taken the gradual method, I don't know.
