How popular / accepted is anime culture in general?
I think we have as many weebs as Russia and other slav countries. Anime is still considered a little weird among normalfags, but there are anime cosplay conventions and all that stuff. A lot of imageboard users are weebs, so no surprises here.
Sometimes anime airs on mainstream TV but only if it's a classic (Evangelion, Bebop, etc.) or something accessible like Ghibli
Last week I saw a cute girl on the bus talking with her friend about anime, she even had a watchlist in her notebook. I didn't talk to her though

Not a lot. Some anime is pretty much normie tier. Many young people will freely admit to enjoying things like DBZ when they were younger.
Watching undubbed, buying "creepy" merchandise like figurines and body pillows, or watching girly/SoL shows will usually lead to weird looks and a measure of scorn. Speaking pidgin Japanese or wearing weeb clothing in pubic is a great way to commit social suicide.

My country has a huge normie culture/tradition,most of the people that watch anime here probably only watch mainstream ones(naruto and sometimes atack on titan),we also had alot of anime that aired in our main tv channels but that stopped around late 2000s,every single teenager and adult knows about dragon ball tho,it was very popular,however,it's not considered an anime here but just a cartoon...
digimon,pokemon,yugioh,beyblade and all that shit were also pretty popular at least for my generation,but they're just treated as children's cartoon... Basically,if somebody knows you watch anime,and if you're older than 16(at best),they'll label you as a weirdo...

BUT the main problem is that they are really superficial and fucking casuals, all the "otaku" (faggots love to call themselves like this here) girls i've known only have watched shit like vampire knight and sailor moon and add "kawaii" to every bullshit they write
i also knew this one faggot that only ever watched DBZ, he was a diehard fan of it and always went full autist every time i tried to instruct him in the matter
Also a couple of Chads liked watching Naruto and the fuckers even got their gfs to watch it with them. Every time they had an argument about some bullshit powerlevel or why naruto was always saying "dattebayo" they called me and i had to explain everything to them
And there are the "otaku events" some neckbeards make and no one ever goes as there's nothing to do in them
TLDR: Not even one knew about /a/ maymays and interacting with them was like swimming in some newfag forum

It's strange really, the older generation watch anti-Japanese dramas daily and spew Anti-Jap slurs while their kids enjoy annie-mays, have waifus/husbandos and can speak varying levels of Japanese. Amongst the youth, some Japanese words have managed to slip into the mainstream vernacular as well.
