There are two types of adjectives. The i-adjective and the na-adjective.
赤い red
This is an i-adjective because it ends in an extra い that is not part of the Kanji.
元気 happy
This is a na-adjective, note how it does not have a hiragana い added to it. This is the fundamental difference between i- and na-adjectives.
EXCEPTIONS:
There are a few words that don't exactly follow this logic, for example
きれい beautiful
looks like an i-adjective because it is usually written in all Hiragana.
But it really is written 綺麗 and as you can see there is no extra い added in the original way of writing.
