Not Northern European, but NZ's culture has been destroyed by multiculturalism. 100 years ago we considered ourselves British. All white people were British. British pride and all that very strong. Now days a white person doesn't even know where the fuck their family is from. There is no "British NZ" and all that shit.
>>
>>50996765

It's just peachy, as long as you're a native and isn't living in the ghetto.

And it's not like the ghetto dwellers are living in want, of anything physical anyway.

The gang crime is becoming a bit of a nuisance however, people have taken to using grenades for assassination for some reason, besides just shooting each other which is happening more and more frequently.

And of course we just went up to full 4/5 terror alert yesterday when what I hope was a prank call of some sort resulted in the arrest of this guy today, at an immigration facility no less.

But other than that it's still just fine. I mean, it's like a fruit fly landing on your ice cream really in terms of proportions. It doesn't affect day-to-day living, besides the Romanian gypsy beggars sitting in literally every street corner, but they're harmless really. One of them tried to grab my baby nephew when my sister was walking past but it was probably just a case of mental illness, they hardly have access to that where they come from, the poor things.
>>
>>50996853
Fuck, you guys don't have genealogy records like we do? Preserve that bloodline man.
On a different note, I get the feeling white people can't have their own culture anymore. I mean, I wouldn't know what it feels like to be Anglo-Saxon, but it once seemed like a honor to be so. Nowadays, you gotta make room for all of the minorities. Been planning on moving to the States, I wouldn't want to be a FOB who forces his own culture over the predominant one.

We're literally changing our flag because we no longer want to associate ourselves with the Union Jack. It's a fucking disgrace.
>>
>>50997080

It's going to be a continuation of the pre-existing conditions: welfare ghettos. This is nonnegotiable because of the conditions of the first-generation immigrants from e.g. Somalia.

The question is only how many second and third generation immigrants are going to slip through the mesh. As of now it seems like the majority, but this might change.

All memes aside your country isn't actually beyond hope. It's clear your center right party (I forget the name, the one your media call fascist) is a lot more right leaning than they openly admit to. Every anti-immigration party in Europe knows they need to appear less right wing than they really are to get elected. Once you have a government of people who are genuinely anti-immigration and have control of the state propoganda machine shit can change pretty quickly.

Not that much really. If you know one system, it is very easy to learn the other system It changed parts of characters. For example 學 became 学 and 說 became 说. I guess it is not unlike UK spelling and US spelling.
>>
>>51001093
you still will need to know traditional even in china, it does appear

china imports a lot of books from hk and tw and they don't bother with reprinting it

it is easier to write with but beyond that with ideology and history it is totally inconsistent

even the traditional characters are simplified from the kangxi dictionary which was published just under 300 years ago

so when they say they are "preserving culture" it is probably safe to see it as farce
>>

we had a "simplification" too when commies came, but really you can't compare simplification of an alphabetic system to a hieroglyphic one

Simplified is design for Mandarin

Not trying to defend Simplified Chinese man, it's just a force of habit for me. My best guess is that Taiwan got their shit together early, Mainland's bureaucracy is goddamn nightmareish inefficient. It helps that you guys also speak roughly the same dialect.
>>51001672
Despite the whole INVADE CHINA thing, you gotta give credits to the Japs. Their Meiji Restoration was a sound plan, saving their asses from being fucked by imperialistic powers. The Qing government tried to emulate the success of Meiji, but to little avail. Getting our asses kicked in the First Sino-Japanese War didn't help as well. People got panicky, they wanted to find a scapegoat for their problems. And Confucianism was their answer.

Technically they were always in use in Korea, in the form of the Chinese language itself. Koreans had keked themselves out of using the Korean language for anything other than speech, which is why it's now so undeveloped compared to the elaborate norms of Japanese.

>>
>>51001895
>Meiji Restoration was a sound plan
They always had a dualistic system of government
the shogun vs emperor thing really made westernization absolute, they would have it either way

while the china had been about authority and centralization, the qing bureaucracy kept modernization subservient to their uses, like the ever victorious army, there was no way to get westernization to replace the chinese bureaucracy like japan did with the creation of their parliament

>Hangul
If memory serves me right, the Koreans still use Chinese characters for places and names right?>>51002024
One of the biggest reasons as to "why did China fall" is the whole ethnocentrism policy that has carried on for dynasties. When the West rose to power, the Qing Dynasty did fuckall to answer. Japan got scared straight after the Matthew Perry Incident but China never truly woke up.
>>
>>51002048
I kind of like Simplified for Mandarin because it takes so many characters to write down what you say that having them all be traditional is overkill, but I've been reading too much classical poetry and the old language is very short and concise. Good stuff.

Korean language is chock full of Chinese words and yes, that means nearly all place names were converted into Chinese at some point but actually using the characters is now decorative. Hangul predominates.

To be honest, if you were going to read Modern Chinese, Simiplified is ok.

>Reading old stuff
Classic Chinese tend to express a meaning with changing a single word's part of speech, and very contextual.

Simplified Chinese vocabs must have two words to distinguish ambiguity while this theory isn't suitable for Classic Chinese

Simiplified Chinese was a temporary method for Romanizing Chinese.

Yeah, I realized the hypocrisy of reciting Classical texts back in grade school with Mandarin and Simplified Chinese. As a Southerner, there is still resentment of the government shoving the traditionally northern Mandarin to us. We use it but older people still opt to conversate

in their respective dialects. My hometown's dialect is apparently part of Southwest Mandarin but try getting a guy straight out of Beijing to understand what my folks back home say...
>>
I met some qts from Guangzhou the other night at a language exchange. They were really friendly and changed my preconceptions of mainlander Chinese. Though they were obviously from a family wealthy enough to travel and send them to university.

What's it like being Chinese?
>>
the dialect things has to do with the massive movement of people for collectivization and industrialization before and after the civil war, mostly after as people from different regions flood into other parts they had to try to make everyone speak the same thing

since wu does not have a written form it really just made it much easier to accept the mandarin methods, it would be nice to see the difference forms of wu actually have their respective characters realized since many of their sayings are unrecognizable in mandarin
>>
>>51002583
>They were really friendly
People in China are actually pretty respectful of foreigners in the sense of "Oh my god a foreigner I've never seen one except on television" , at least where I came from.
I remember seeing a foreigner at McDonalds in China where there was a seemingly Spanish guy and someone struck up a conversation with him wanting to know where he's from.

That would be my interpretation of Wu into Simplified Chinese. Shanghaiese (the popular dialect of Wu) was crushed by the CCP back in the day, but now the government supports the preservation of Shanghaiese within Shanghai. Problem is, youngsters do not even know their mother tongue anymore; it's like New Yorkers not knowing how to "tawk".

Was there any other way to deal with the linguistic disunity of the Chinese people? The state needed a common language, one that could actually be spoken, so they chose Beijing Mandarin which already was the language of the court in the north. At least, that's how I see it. I mean, it is kind of sad, but elsewhere traditional idioms have also been mostly destroyed by standardization - in France, Germany, even Russia. The French in particular forced the whole country to speak Parisian French, and the Germans created what is largely an artificial language out of a number of dialects. Russians made everyone speak the Moscow dialect with copious South Slavic influence. I mean, isn't it simply the nature of life right now? Having multiple varieties of a single language is no longer sustainable, and the influence of English as the single global language is ever growing.

In retrospect, having an united manner of speaking was for the best. My hometown is like two hours away from Mao's and I have no clue what the fuck they are saying. Cantonese is one province away and they sound like aliens to me. The pros outweigh the cons in this case. They went a little too hard with the eradication of local dialects however.
>>51003023
Yeah, probably wasn't the best idea.

>>50995140

mfw i understand cantonese but i can neither write nor speak with the correct tone
>>
>>51003034
some do actually survive

even though mao and ccp has been quite adamant about standardizing spoken chinese it is not sufficient to change culture

there is still a whole schools of opera in china that continue to be staged in their perspective dialect, the media might enforce spoken mandarin but outside of that there is still some examples of variations

>>
>>51003239
Dialects still exist, it's just the fact that many of them have been washed by the presiding Mandarin dialect.
>>51003175
If they speak real slow, I can interpret their meanings most of the time. The tones aren't the problem for me; it's the Cantonese-exclusive vocabulary that gets me.
>>51003012
Personally, I like the voice of Northerners. Southern accents tend to be nasal in nature.
>>
>>51003440
I do in fact need to brush up on my Chinese. I don't use it much except when communicating with family members so I thought that whatever accent I may have had would be long gone, given that I can't write Chinese characters anymore.

Shit, the one I'm living in was built only a decade ago and the main foundation was starting to crack. Mainland China can't into architecture. Also, it doesn't help that my city was wiped clean by Chiang's scorched earth policy; everything looks either like Albert Speer's work or muddy huts and buildings.

My grandparents are. But what can you do about it after not practicing for more than ten years?
I can still speak, read and listen well enough to get by though.
