Talking about cigarettes this is completely true, however, cigar smokers tend to be highly educated (or just intelligent).
I don't smoke either of the two, but I know a lot of cigarette smokers and they are all without exception fucking idiots. I know a few cigar smokers. One has a doctorate and the other is a really smart and successful person, although not formally educated.

Cigarettes are pretty lower-class, at least around where I live. Cigars are for classier folks or when a cigarette smoker has something to celebrate. I've known exactly one pipe smoker, and he was in his late 60s, French, and collected antique firearms and stamps. He never explained why that particular combo appealed.

I've seen firsthand what it has done to family. If you're lucky, you drop dead of a heart attack in your 60's. Quiting only prevents further damage. Your cardiovascular system gets wrecked. Scar tissue in your lungs doesn't act like normal healthy lung tissue. You can literally drown in your own secretions. On the plus side, I hear drowning is a very peaceful way to go.

Used to smoke. Started when I was 12. Gave it up last year and have been vaping every since. Statistically the same is probably true here, but a lot of people from all walks of life smoke. Health care workers are notorious for smoking and drinking too much for example. If anything I think it's a generational thing.. A lot less people smoke nowadays than they did when I grew up. It's also a lot less acceptable: as a teenager smoking in pubs and even trains etc. was normal. Now it's quite difficult to find a place to light up without feeling really antisocial.
