The best kinds of visas are multi-entry visas of 180+ days. Each time you enter and leave the country, you get another 180 days, until a certain date is reached where no matter what you must leave the country or become an illegal
I won't sugarcoat the many difficulties of living in China--it can be very dark and confusing once you leave that honeymoon period--but after enough time I found my niche and become quite comfortable with my ?? status. Also, to reuse the kinds of things you'll often hear from China folk, there is a real excitement on the ground there that I'd never experienced in 'murica because it's not a developing country. It's a crazy and whacky time, and I met some of strangest, wonderful people I ever encountered there. The best part of the country imo is connecting with locals.

Yeah I'm white, so I dealt with the strange and often preferential treatment that white folk tend to get while in China, esp. outside of Shanghai and BJ (if you're white and haven't been yet, you'll be surprised at first because it seems like you're near celebrity status, but imo it's not nearly so simple as that, and with all things, there are pros and cons to this kind of situation)
I was based out of Shanghai (I'll be returning there this time around too), but since I had so much time there I did a fair bit of traveling. All told I think I went to Beijing, Xinjiang from the far western border to Lanzhou, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Chengdu, Changsha, Guilin, Yangshuo, Xiamen/Gulangyu, and a couple of other random national parks and places like huangshan, etc.
I think it's much easier to study the language out of Shanghai/Beijing though, in all honesty, because the expat communities are much smaller, locals' English is generally much shabbier, and you're put much more into a sink or swim situation

Do language exchanges/paid tutoring. If you're near a school, there will be plenty of qt undergrads willing to do exchanges, and the standard tutoring rate was 40 kuai/hour when I was there 2 years ago (at least at Fudan)

Usually the 'language exchanges' are the free kind of arrangement where you tutor them for an hour one week, then they get you back the next week, etc.
Standard tutoring was 40 kuai/hour, but local students would sometimes recognize the fact that that's peanuts for most foreigners and offer more (one girl was working a part time job, wanted to improve her English, and so offered me 100 kuai/hour. I negotiated down to 50 kuai/hour because I felt bad. I bring up this example to illustrate that though you *could* probably make more money, you might want to investigate first)
The real money comes from tutoring the children of wealthy Chinese parents. I knew a guy who tutored a large shopping mail chain's owner for the SAT at 2500 kuai/hour. No shit. Of course, that will probably never happen unless you hit the jackpot, but I was offered gigs to tutor 7 year olds for like 200 an hour. The easiest way to get these kind of opportunities is to network through your teachers/program leader and tell them to contact you if they hear of anything

Thanks for the well thought out response. China isn't my long term goal, but if I really like it there and can see myself living there during my visit, I wouldn't rule it out. I'd like to see what it's like being in the majority for once in my 22 years of life. That said, my life in the states hasn't been bad at all, mainly due to rich parents and good genetics (height/aesthetics etc). I've just been through the same self-hatred phase that every ABC inevitably goes through, and I think I'm at the end of it.
