Holy shit, a lot of French dialects sound identical to Italian. I had no idea about this. I thought it was just Occitan that shared some similarity in the pronounce. How come it was that cum guzzling language that became the standard one?

A lot of dialects in the center sound like Italian too. That was the thing which surprised me the most.
In order to try and be less ignorant of geography I've started putting maps of countries up as my desktop background to occasionally look at and memorize
